It's all been said so many times I was hoping another refutation of

ozone was not needed. What does the garment industry have to

do with the quality of indoor air, the effects of a strong oxidizing

agent (ozone) on our lungs, and the byproducts left over for us to

breath after ozone reacts with previously innocuous ones?

+ alpine for some eye opening info.

As for mold, what good does it do to kill mold when the

components and emanations of mold growth which affect us

most are still present?

Carl, thanks. It's good to repeat these things from time to time because we are

You're right, . I sometimes forget that. So in that light, a

couple of other comments.

" Kill " is not the same as " destroy. " To me, to destroy mold means

it no longer has any of the component parts of mold, it is

denatured. It no longer has the nature of mold and therefore

could not cause the effects in humans that mold can. So I would

want to detect zero amounts of proteins, enzymes, glucans,

mycotoxins, proteinases, DNA, etc. Ozone doesn't even come

close to any of that.

As long as we are in the education mode, I wonder why they list

" mold, fungis (sic), spores " as separate. Fungus is an entire

Kingdom (like plants and animals are each their own Kingdom).

Mold is a sporulating subset of fungi with yeast being the non-

sporulating subset. Spores are the reproductive " seeds " of mold

(like tree seeds) and are not constantly created or released.

Some will switch between mold and yeast as the environment

changes.

Recent studies, esp from Scandinavia, find fragments from the

rest of the mold organism (think about a tree that produces

seeds) to outnumber spores by as much as a hundred or even

thousands of times. A presentation at the recent Orlando

conference discussed the importance of the surface area of small

particles. As the spores and hyphae dries and fragments the

number of particles increases (think about the how tree leaves in

the fall dries and crumbles to dust). This increases the surface

area dramatically, perhaps accounting for some of the currently

unexplained claims of reaction. (Currently being studied).

Bacteria are more easily killed by ozone and UV light. Which is

very important if they are infectious. But most aren't, especially

those found in damp buildings. However, the endotoxins are

taking on a larger role in damp buildings, and even amobea have

been discovered on damp materials.

There is much, much more to mold than spores and much, much

more to damp indoor spaces than mold. This does not weaken

our claims, but should weaken the legal defense against us if

they don't include these other factors. (Assuming the plaintiffs

attorney appropriately includes them to begin with).

Great response, Carl. Thanks for taking the time to point out the mistakes in

that article about the garment industry and to educate our new members.

Please pay strict attention to what the author is trying to convey, the

benefits of using ozone in textile processing and laundry, totally closed

systems. He is not selling ozone generators for air purification use, as that

would be totally irresponsible.

I worked 32 years for a company which used high levels of ozone for chemical

processing. We used it safely in a totally closed system where it was totally

consumed before product was removed. Ozone is also used in many areas for water

purification to reduce the levels of chlorine necessary, reducing the chlorine

aftertaste. All these systems are closed, and these industrial users recognize

the hazards of ozone leaks. Personal exposure to ozone must be less than 80 ppb

in air in order to prevent severe and permanent lung damage. The fresh scent of

a thunderstorm is associated with cleaning, but that thought is deceiving. That

scent is shortlived. Prolonged exposure is hazardous. Ozone must never

intentionally be used in an occupied building. It does have limited uses in

restoration of fire damaged buildings, used when the buildings are sure to be

empty. As Carl alludes to, using ozone to kill mold without addressing the

underlying cause of a mold problem is a dangerous exercise in futility.
