Guest guest
Could be because signs and symptoms of the late stage of syphilis include difficulty coordinating muscle movements and numbness. http://www.cdc.gov/std/syphilis/STDFact-Syphilis.htm Or could be that the disease was dubbed the " Great Imitator " because it was often confused with other diseases, particularly in its tertiary stage. It was termed " neurosyphilis " . Other characteristics of untreated tertiary syphilis include neuropathic joint disease, which is a degeneration of joint surfaces resulting from loss of sensation and fine position sense (proprioception).Neurological complications at this stage can be diverse. More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syphilis Or could be 18th/19th and early 20th century doctors lack of education about what Syphilis was and what CMT was/is. Syphilis has a much greater history of knowledge that CMT. It wasn't really until the 1990's that CMT knowledge really burst out with the first genetic mutation found. Or could be from websites like this that mention peripheral neuropathy, syphillis and CMT http://www.medicinenet.com/peripheral_neuropathy/article.htm Gretchen
