Guest guest
Wanted to update the group on filing for disability. I took my last paycheck in December 2008 and applied for SSDI January 2009.I went in person as i was told people like to help those that they like. I had a 3 ring binder with sections divided out with all my disability paperwork, all doctor visits since 1984, another section with lab work, emg...... and another section that explained what CMT is. I made 3 copies of the book; one for disability, one for my new neurologist and one for me to keep.I then periodically received the paperwork, filled it out immediately and would fax back. I then was sent to their psychiatrist (which was BS for me, as i only indicated i am on antidepressants to help deal with the anxiety of a progressive disease) Then they sent me to their doctor for a physical and within a week, i had backpay in my checking account where they determined me disabled May 2008. This came a week before my award letter, so you can imagine my surprise! All in all, the process was 5 months for me. The point here is be VERY organized. I also let my doctors know in advance that i was applying and my old dr i used to see, i explained to him specifically how i have progressed and to please be on the lookout for the paperwork. If anyone would like any suggestions or help in filling out forms, please feel free to contact me. I filled out all the forms and have them saved in word if anyone wanted to see what i wrote on the adult function report or my work reports. It is wierd being excited because you have officially been found disabled. This will free me up so i can concentrate more on doing things for CMT and hopefully start a support group soon. It was just too overwhelming doing it all at once, along with the regular life problems that occur when you have 3 kids under the age of 21!
