Guest guest
Francine, Ask your doctor to write a 'prescription' for water exercise. Also ask your doctor to write a formal letter stating why you need pool exercise (due to CMT, pain etc) - that you need water exercise for medical purposes. Perhaps she/he could include a note about your financial limitations. Take all this to the Director of your YMCA and make an offer of what you CAN afford. I wouldn't expect a free ride, but you may be able to negotiate a lower fee. The YMCA here charges $175 a month, so it seems $ 41 is very low. My own gym (private, not the Y) charges $50 a month if it is electronically withdrawn, if paid by check of credit card it is $55 a month. And for gyms in CA, that is real cheap. Not only do I have use of 2 pools, but the entire workout center and also classes. My doctor writes a 'prescription' for the pool every 6 months which I use for tax purposes. Guest guest
Francine, You may be able to get a better deal with a 'for profit' club like LA Fitness or Bally's. Bally's charges $29,99/month for most clubs, but you can pay $25/mo if you pay one year in advance. Sometimes they have better promotions. Also, if you go into the club and talk with the manager, you may be able to work out an even better deal for you & your husband together. You can try this approach at LA Fitness too. Go in and sit down them and negotiate. If there are any new gyms/clubs opening up near you, you may be able to work out a deal with them. That's usually the best time to negotiate. I was able to negotiate a great rate when a new LA Fitness opened near me. And, if you have a membership with a club for awhile and then cancel, they will usually send you really good 'come back to us' offers at even lower rates! I still get notices from Bally's 20 years later with awesome 'come back to us' rates. Guest guest
Hi Francine, I do wish you luck, with YMCA. If they hold firm on the price, I wonder if there might be some other senior options available near your home. You may want to check with AARP or your county senior office, to see if they have any less expensive options. I did a search on L.A. and came up with this: http://www.laparks.org/dos/therapeutic/therapeutic.htm I didn't research further, so I don't know the cost, but if there are programs like this near you, perhaps it might be worth checking out. Also, some HOAs, mobile home parks, and apartment complexes have pools and many keep them heated in the winter. If you have any friends who have these kinds of facilities at their home, perhaps you can visit them. Just brainstorming...I do hope it works out for you at the YMCA.
