Guest guest
Hi and , What about an all terrain tricycle or bicycle for your daughter to use? http://www.thefind.com/family/info-all-terrain-tricycle If she can't ride a tricycle or bike, maybe something like a Radio Flyer Wagon or a Childrens Bike Bicycle Trailer this site has alot of choices. http://www.thefind.com/family/info-all-terrain-tricycle some other sites http://rhinotrikes.com/rhinotrikes.htm http://www.wagonworld.com/ http://www.globalsources.com/manufacturers/All-Terrain-Tricycle.html http://www.qualitytoys.com/berg-steppy-scooter.html http://www.wheelandsprocket.com Surf around, there are many more sites, and prices vary depending on what you want. I spent 3 summers in Guatemala, mostly at Tikal, Bonampak and Tulum working on my thesis. I have fond memories of the people, culture, Chicastenago, and of course the rainforrest, parrots, and other creatures. Gretchen
Guest guest
and , Would a heavy duty tricycle work. Also, could one of the all terrain strollers w/ big bike wheels be altered or work as is? Chris Br
Guest guest
and , Another thought...There are beach wheel chairs that are specifically designed to have wider traction tires to grip uneven terrain better. Best of Luck >
Guest guest
and , How about a wagon...?How do others travel there.? Geri
Guest guest
Here in San Diego, on Mission Beach, you can get a free, daily, loan of a beach worthy wheel chair. You have to return it at the end of the day, but you can't argue with free. O >
Guest guest
A wagon is an excellent suggestion Geri. And I bet being in a wagon would be an instant attraction for other kids to approach and play. O
Guest guest
and , After a long day in the orchards picking fruit, then the drive home I had another thought about transport for your daughter in Guatemala - and that is a horse, a mule, or a donkey. From what I remember there were mules, donkeys and some ponies doing alot of work. It may also be rather fun for your daughter. Maybe you can connect with these people - I don't know exactly the area you are in or how remote. If I remember correctly, every place I visited (this was early 70's) was pretty much covered in massive jungle and the roads were extremely narrow, with people and their stuff on mules or donkeys. http://www.thebrooke.org/content.asp?id=612 & cachefixer=cf03516845679649aybe http://www.tikalcnx.com/ Or maybe you can connect with one of the Rotary clubs, the Peace Corps, or the U.S. Embassy to arrange 'rental' of an animal for your daughter to ride. Guest guest
Also a wagon with two wheels so a large dog, or goat can be trained to pull it. Geri

Guest guest
and , My daughter was 6 when we found out she had CMT. We live in the country and being horse people we got one for her. It was the best form of physicle therapy we could get. She is 28 now, 3 children and not only rides but she trains horses. Sharon
Guest guest
Hi and Cheryl, I have had CMT since I was a child. My parents used to hold my hands, that was enough for me. With a more severe problem and uneven ground I would recommend a child walker. That means your daughter can walk without having to concentrate on her balance. A tricycle could be great too, there are bigger models for bigger kids. Also, I like cool looking aids, and something that looks really cool and would be great for your daughter is the carts you can hang after bikes, but also remove and use as a " buggy " . They are big enough to accomodate a bigger child + package, and there is a raincover! There are 4 or 3 wheeled versions. No need for a bike at all, but of course it is a plus, to be able to go biking to. Think your daughter would prefer this! My son loved his, and he does not have CMT. We just stopped using it, because he can bike around on his own well now (he is 6) but no problem for him to sit in it still (+ a couple of bags fit too...) Good luck! As missionaries we travel a lot through Guatemala. Our daughter does well after she had surgery to lengthen her Achilles tendons but gets tired after walking for a length of time. A wheelchair is impractical as the terrain in most of the places that we go is not suitable. Does anyone have an idea what we could use to cart her around when she gets tired? We have been carrying her but we are in our sixties and she is not overweight but solid and it is causing us some medical problems. & Ladd
