Guest guest
Lori, You might be interested in O's info on explaining CMT to kids. It may help your son explain to his friends. http://cmtausa.org/parents_kids/parents_story.php?id=20 Remembering back to when I was 10 and just diagnosed, I had no concept that this would be a " lifelong thing " . The doc told me I had CMT, that I needed foot surgery, and to swim and walk in sand. I thought that was OK, my feet would get fixed, I'd go to a hospital (big adventure!) and have casts on after. The doc also told me my CMT may be 'slightly progressive, or not at all'. (this was in the early 60's) The years went by, symptoms came and went, and were treated where possible with supplements, medication or physical therapy. All throughout my life my good friends never cared what I had and were often amazed at how brave and 'daring' I was in some situations. My parents and friends never made a big deal out of my CMT and I grew up just as part of the mainstream. 46 years later here I am with CMT as a " lifelong thing " , the years passed, I grew up, CMT is just one part of who I am and I consider myself part of the mainstream still. Guest guest
Parents faces are mirrors to children. When my niece was in the hospital having cleft lip surgery we were told to go in happy and smiling so she wouldn't be scared. It worked until she saw an actual mirror.
