Hi Lori,

Squeeze a tennis ball or some putty, then open your hand wide. Repeat a few

times.

Touch each finger to your thumb on one hand, back and forth. Then go to other

hand and repeat.

Both of these can be done in water (warm/hot) which may help loosen tight

muscles.

You may want to check-in with a Physical Therapist, they have some 'hand toys'

and can give you guidance so you don't overdo it.

Buy a few of those " grip squeezers " you see in sporting goods stores, and

keep them

all around-- in the car, house, office, etc. It's amazing how often you can

use them

and how they strengthen your grip.

Hi Lori -

Several folks have mentioned " putty " ...it worked well for too. Although,

what we purchased was through his OT and it was called " Therapy Putty " . It has

more substance and elasticity.

You kind of play with it as if it were Play Dough...roll the snakes, wind it

through your fingers, roll up little balls to big balls etc.

I've been known to use it once in a while to help ease my arthritis pain in my

hands. It helps that too!

Good luck

Another thing my brother told me was to put your finger tips on the car steering

wheel and do finger " push ups " whenever you can. Strenghtens the " outside "

muscles of the hand.

Just be careful of overuse, as Gretchen already mentioned.

I tried the grib squeezers and the only result was soreness in my joints and

weakness in my fingers, no increase in grip strength.  I discontinued use

immediately.

Hi Lori,

I make a fist, and squeeze. Most of the time, squeezing anything else just is too

painfull. I also do the sign language alphabet to keep my fingers limber, as

they tends to draw up. It really helps my thumb also.

Hope this helps,

Angie in SC

Hi Tina,

Yes, you can make things worse by exercising incorrectly.  So exercise has to be

done with care.

With the grib strengthener device, it requires that you pull in with your

fingertips.  If muscles are weak, it can strain and cause weakness/soreness.  At

least it did for me.  I find the same thing happens when I've used a water

aerobics glove when I'm in the pool.  It's just puts too much strain on the

weakened fingers.  I've actually never had any success with repetitive

hand exercises with or without devices.

But, everyone is different.  You can ask your doctor his/her opinion of what

types of exercises could safely be done in your case.  The putty might be an

option if it's not too strenuous for your hands.  Also, it's important to listen

to your own body.  If doing a hand exercise causes soreness or pain or makes you

feel more weak later, those are signs it's probably not working for you.

I've had good luck with the grip squeezers. I play saxophone and don't want

to lose

hand strength. Just use common sense and do as much (or as little) as your

hands

tell you to.
