Mike,

You said that your niece lived near a lake. Well, I just recently read

an article that linked living near a lake in New Hampshire to the

increased incidences of ALS .

That article on the top link stated that this increase in the number of

cases of ALS around the lake might be due to the toxic cyanobacteria

growing within the lake. Cyanobacteria produces a neurotoxic amino acid

called beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) .

Also, from 1940 to about 1965 there was increased incidence of ALS in

Guam. And some scientists believe that the increased incidence of ALS

saw in Guam was due from exposure to cyanobacteria and BMAA.
