Guest guest
Mike, You said that your niece lived near a lake. Well, I just recently read an article that linked living near a lake in New Hampshire to the increased incidences of ALS . http://davidgillett.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-hampshire-lake-linked-to-al\ s.html <http://davidgillett.blogspot.com/2009/06/new-hampshire-lake-linked-to-a\ ls.html%20> From the University of Miami: http://www.med.miami.edu/news/view.asp?id=1071 <http://www.med.miami.edu/news/view.asp?id=1071> http://tinyurl.com/kmlocu <http://tinyurl.com/kmlocu> That article on the top link stated that this increase in the number of cases of ALS around the lake might be due to the toxic cyanobacteria growing within the lake. Cyanobacteria produces a neurotoxic amino acid called beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) . Also, from 1940 to about 1965 there was increased incidence of ALS in Guam. And some scientists believe that the increased incidence of ALS saw in Guam was due from exposure to cyanobacteria and BMAA. http://www.ethnomedicine.org/research/neurodegenerative.asp <http://www.ethnomedicine.org/research/neurodegenerative.asp> http://www.asm.org/microbe/index.asp?bid=36663 <http://www.asm.org/microbe/index.asp?bid=36663> http://tinyurl.com/m2o6et <http://tinyurl.com/m2o6et> I hope this info helps. -
