Rob,

OK so I'm not in college anymore, but I did the mild, social drinking scene in

college. 2 parties on the weekends - maybe a 'study break' on Wed. evening. My

balance was pretty bad then, but I was doing alot of biking, very active in a

sorority, copy and layout editor on the college newspaper (before the PC Era!)

and a member of the Dean's Advisory Council. I also got very little or no sleep

which always whacks out my balance. During all this I developed a CMT hand

tremor, which was subdued with Valium, which seemed to make my balance worse, I

just held up alot of walls now and then, lol

In graduate school my drinking got worse, but it seemed my balance was better. I

was still biking, and swimming daily then (I remember the swimming used to

smoothe me out and helped me sleep better) For the most part I ignored CMT and

did what I needed to do.

Long story short, in 1979 (don't think you were born yet!) I had my last drink,

be it mild, wild, diluted, social or alcoholic.

So, having been there, be careful, very careful, do not ignore CMT, get rest,

eat wisely, take good care of yourself. In our Files section there is a good

article on Alcohol and CMT you may want to read.

Hi Rob,

I have a son who is 23 and in college. He doesn't drink. (except at his 21st

birthday party) When he goes out with the guys now, he has a coke. I don't

think alcohol is good for us with CMT...but personally, I don't think one drink

" every now and then " .....not every week....won't hurt us. Like a glass of wine

with dinner or something like that. Have a great evening.....and good luck with

school.

Hugs,

Sherry

Hi Rob,

My son is 20 and his last visit with his neurologist was right before he started

college and the doc was very serious about how negatively alcohol affects the

nerves and that someone with CMT really should avoid it. With that said I do

remember (believe it or not) being your age and the college scene and the

parties but (you knew the " but " was coming) it's important that you take the

time to read the articles Gretchen mention, listen to what you will be told from

this group and decided if it's worth it to risk the damage you may cause to

yourself to have those drinks on a regular basis. If your debating it, I think

you may already have your answer.

Take care

Everyone:

I was young too when in college. One night I drank 1 bottle of beer at a bar,

without eating before. When I left, my walking was horrible even when walking

with four arm crutches and AFOs. Never did that again.

Rob:

Just make sure you eat right before or while drinking. Keep drinking mild too,

not all the time. As I said before, it can destroy the way you walk. I'm age

32 now, but I remember the college years.

Any College or High School kids?

Just wondering if there are any kids in high school or college here.

I'm 18 with CMT and a freshman at college. I figure I can offer advice for

high school kids now, and hopefully any people in or just out of college can

help me out too.

One of my questions is (if you can answer), did you drink at college while

having CMT symptoms (foot drop, bad balance, possible depression)? I'm debating

whether I should continue with mild, social drinking on weekends and stuff.

If you wanna ask about anything, you know my email, and my AIM screen name is

Everyone: thanks a lot for the responses, any more advice you guys have on

drinking or information on alcohol's effect on CMT would be really helpful.

There's a lot of drinking at my college, and like I said I'm still thinking

about it.

I got a funny story about it actually. So I went out with friends and

everything, and I ended up pretty drunk. Anyways, I'm not sure how it happened

but I after I came back, slept, and woke up the next morning my big toenail was

crushed and half its size. And I was wearing sneakers, too. I guess the

combination of loss of sensation and the numbness of drinking added up to a

broken toenail and me not noticing for almost a day! It's growing back totally

healthy though and I never got any pain.

So anyway, more shared personal experiences would be great, and I'm just taking

a look at the articles on alcohol and CMT in Files now.

Hi Rob,

I was reading your question about drinking and CMT.

When I was at school I drank a lot, the party scene was quite big at my

school. I did not know I had CMT at that time.

More than aggravating CMT, I just think the excessive amount that I had was

not good for my health.

Now I drink moderately and also it is somewhat a job risk for when I

interact with Asian clients - drinking can be a big, ritual deal in China

and Japan. I think as long as you are aware of what you are doing, that

drinking can be ok in moderation.

Of course the risk is getting caught up in the moment. I remember a snow

day and drinking the list of beers at our local bar. I don't remember much

after the 7th beer. So that is getting caught up in the moment. I would

advise against that!

Take care and good luck with your choices,

Donna from London
