Guest guest
I would love to know of such a website as well. Another good thing to know is which supplements can be taken together. Many ASD kids are taking a number of supplements and it would be nice to have a central source of information on which ones can be mixed with others and which ones can't. And also, the timing of the supplements: with meals, in between meals, bedtime, etc. Many pill bottles do not say if the supplement needs to be taken with meals or not. Is any info on mixing supplements or timings in the CSB book? If anyone has come across a website or even accumulated this info and willing to share, I would be most appreciative. I am trying to get 20+ pills down my daughters throat ever day and it would be helpful to know if I'm doing it right! For example, can GSH be taken with Probiotics and Amino Acids and minerals? Are enzymes OK with B-vitamins? Can Biocidin be taken with meals? etc. etc. Thanks for your help, Jena > > Hello: > > Is there a website where I cna go to look up the proper dosing for all of > the vits/supps.? > > Example: Nordic Naturals CLO..........1 tsp. daily > Nordic Naturals complete Omega 3-6-9 1 tsp. daily > > How do I know if he is getting too much vitamin " E " for example with it > being in both above and in a multi-vitamin and mag. with vit. Guest guest
I agree with Jena and Judy - I would LOVE to have a comprehensive listing of all common supplements given to ASD kids that included the following information: 1) Time of day that is best to give it 2) For maximum efficacy, should the daily dosage be split up into 2 or 3 times a day? 3) Should it be given on a full or empty stomach? 4) Should it definitely NOT be given with any other supplements? Or definitely given WITH any? 5) General dosage per lb. of body weight, or age, whichever is appropriate. My kids go to a terrific DAN! doctor, but this is not something that has ever been provided to me. It would be incredibly helpful to have all in one place. In fact, this is all I want for Christmas! Guest guest
This would actually be such a holiday GOOD DEED for a DAN! doctor or DAN! nurse to do for the community. It would save us a lot of heartache and provide for more effective treatment and prevent loss of $ spent on supplements/Rxs that are not being utilized to their fullest. If anyone knows their DAN! doc or nurse more personally (or even a DAN! pharmacist), please make an appeal for us! It would probably be quite an undertaking especially if they can consider all the additional meds and interventions these kids are taking in addition to regular supplements (eg, Spirolactone, anti-virals, anti-fungals, Secretin, etc.). Even the basics would be worth a lot to us. After 1.5 years of biomedical interventions, I found out that you're not supposed to take enzymes with probiotics. If we had some kind of DAN! approved 'cheat sheet' for administering all the biomed interventions, this could prevent such mistakes. Whoever would put their time and energy on such an undertaking would certainly earn the blessings and prayers of a lot of folks! > > I agree with Jena and Judy - I would LOVE to have a comprehensive > listing of all common supplements given to ASD kids that included the > following information: > > > > 1) Time of day that is best to give it > > 2) For maximum efficacy, should the daily dosage be split up into 2 > or 3 times a day? > > 3) Should it be given on a full or empty stomach? > > 4) Should it definitely NOT be given with any other supplements? > Or definitely given WITH any? > > 5) General dosage per lb. of body weight, or age, whichever is > appropriate. > > > > My kids go to a terrific DAN! doctor, but this is not something that has > ever been provided to me. Guest guest
OATS testing needs to determine some of this as well to tell you where your childs levels are, and what is needed. (b6, b12, vit C, toxic load needing selenium, fatty acids amino acids- or where to look further testing wise to find what more might help you determine what would help out), hair metal testing can tell you what you are wasting minerial wise and or low in. liver testing can tell you if misk thistle would be helpful, titers can tell you if vit A would be helpful, lycine ect stool tests would show what natural antibiotics, antifungals, anti parasites, enzymes ect are needed Recovering from Autism is a marathon NOT a sprint, but FULLY possible! Guest guest
Was anyone able to round up a DAN! doc would would agree to do this? Well, I have a few questions if anyone out there has already inquired and knows what to do: 1. Are B-vitamins (taken as a complex or individually) best given at bed time, or with meals, or anytime is OK? 2. Is Oral Glutathione best given with meals or on an empty stomach, or before bed? 3. Is it OK to mix Enzymes with (the following): -Olive Leaf Extract -Biocidin -Oral IgG concentrate -Glutathione -B-complex vitamins -Amino Acids -any EFA's (essential fatty acids) -minerals 4. Is it best to give TMG and minerals on an empty stomach or with food? I will surely appreciate any response. Maybe other listmates are wondering the same things? Thanks for your help (in advance!) Guest guest
Dear Listmates: Just about the time any doc tried to put out this info, he/she would get many protests from other docs who would have a different opinion, or from parents who had been told something else by their doc, since there are not too many iron-clad rules. I am willing to give SOME staples of my practice along these lines for what it is worth: Knowing moms (and caretaking dads) have something more to do than give medicines/nutrients at all hours of the day and night, I generally try to give things in two big batches twice daily, even if sometimes it might be optimal to divide something up into 3 or 4 doses. Our kids like patterns, and once something is done daily and on a regular basis they learn to accept it more easily. An exception is: Amino acid formulations work better if given on an empty stomach, so these may be better if given first thing in the morning at least 15min before breakfast, and when the kids get home from school and before they start snacking. It is not that easy with kids to have long periods of empty stomachs! I mix all the nutrients together and use a syringe to get them into the child if they cannot swallow caps/tabs yet. It is important to mix them in dilute pear juice and give right away; never let them sit around mixed even if in the refrigerator, as the chemical exchanges between them might alter the constitution before they get them absorbed. I give the B-vitamins along with all the rest of the nutrients in their twice daily dosing. This includes vitamins, fatty acids, minerals, MB-12 and folinic acid (unless it is injected or nasal or sublingual, of course), anti-oxidants, glutathione, NAC, TMG, DMG. Since DMG is stimulating, I give those all at once in the morning - I use the little sub-lingual tablets that are naturally sweet and give one for each year up to the best dose, and often give them or any good chewables last as a reward after pouring many syringes of mixed nutrients into the child. The transdermals Authia and glutathione can be given without regard to meals or other nutrients, usually twice daily. If something particularly helps your child relax like glutathione or zinc, of course you can give it at bedtime. When kids are chelating, zinc is so important that I often ask parents to give their child a lone zinc (I like zinc monomethione from VRP) to make sure nothing else interferes with its absorption. Calcium usually is absorbed better with some food. I use probiotics (usually Klaire) that go along with their meals, so that one is easy. If you are giving anti-bacterials, either prescription or natural, they need to be given two hours away from the probiotics, or they will kill the good guys off along with the pathogens. On school days this can be a challenge to get that first dose of anti-bacterials into them if you've been told to give probiotics with every meal including breakfast for this two-hour rule. The 2nd dose given at bed-time is a bit easier; usually food is not an issue with the anti-fungals and anti-bacterials nor with oral or transdermal glutathione. Enzymes usually do better given about 10-15 minutes before the meals, with then giving the probiotics after they have already started eating. Enzymes can be a challenge when the kids have to have enzymes before their lunches at school, though some teachers are OK with taking care of this. I personally don't think I would want to combine enzymes with all the other nutrients - since I usually give them right before meals, all those other nutrients besides possibly being changed by the enzymes would probably affect the child's appetite negatively. As to dosing, no one would dare try to list this, as it depends too much upon not only the weight and age of the child, but their situation (chelating? suffering with infections? excessive inflammation? - the particular brand you're using, etc. Basically this is an art as much as it is a science, and ball park figures for dosing is about all one can usually do. For Magnesium and Vitamin C, I will suggest a dose and say " Per bowel tolerance " as either of these can cause diarrhea and in very different doses for different kids. And I do believe in individual nutrients rather than multiples until kids are well into their healing, so I can know what is doing what. Happy New Year! Guest guest
Thank you so much Dr. McCandless. This is going to help us tremendously. Without trying to be too greedy, I just have one tiny follow up question: If enzymes need to be given with each meal, multiple times a day, what would you say would be a reasonable amount of time in between (number of minutes before or after) giving the enzymes and giving the other nutrient batches? Thanks so much and Happy New Year. Guest guest
Thanks for doing this. Not many people would take the time to write so much info and especially on a holiday. Guest guest
Dear Dr. JM, Same as Jena I don't want to be greedy but just in constant learning here and we appreciate your help very much. If amino acid formulation is to be given at least 15 mins before breakfast and the enzyme 10 to 15 mins before meal, then we are giving these two about the same time before breakfast. Is that ok? If the child drinks a cup of diluted pear juice with the nutrients in it (Vit, minerals, oral glutathione, GSE, etc) rght away is that alright or less liquid in the syringe is preferred? Is it alright to let the probiotics sit in cold food and enzyme in cold juice for 3 hours? Thank you! Sheila > > > You know what would even be > > > better............ Guest guest
Aminos need to be given on empty stomach and alone and I would not give with enzymes. When my son was treated and needed the amino mixture I had to get us up about 30 minutes earlier to get it all in before preschool. I would literally take the aminos to his bedroom with me to get him up and give it immediately.. then enzymes right before the meal and other things during meal and probiotics at the end or at another time of day. My son was very " set off " by anything that did not allow him to eat immediately.. very OCD on schedule to say the least so it was a balancing act in order not to get him into a tantrum with the " down " time in between things.. the key was to keep him occupied so he did not realize we were not yet eating. He could be dressed in about 2 minutes flat and was ready to eat. Dr. JM had written last night to have 20-30 minutes between the enzymes and other nutrients so it should work to give remaining nutrients during the meal. I usually had something that I held out as reward for end of meal after had taken the nutrients. It did require our getting up a little earlier and I am not a morning person at all as I work until about 2-3 AM each AM at my desk but there was no other way to assure it all got done. The only other suggestion is to give aminos after a nap or after school before snack and then again at bedtime unless giving other things like zinc at that time. I also had a period where I gave aminos in middle of night when I did diaper change and that worked just fine too. Guest guest
Amino acids seemed to make our daughter a little hyper so I gave them in the morning. I also have been on funny schedules to accommodate the supplement schedule - 4 am, 6 am, 11 pm and a little bit of everything in between. Isn't it funny that we were considered refrigerator moms so long a go. I don't know anyone who cares more and does more than MOMS of children on the spectrum. The best thing that has come our way has been the Daytrana patch. I know it's very controversial and most kids don't respond or parents won't go that direction. But, it's been amazing for us. Our daughter has been on Ritalin 10mg. for years. We switched to the patch and the difference is incredible. The medicine really works better for our daughter if it doesn't go in her mouth. I was absolutely shocked at the difference - not just in attention but in recall and initiation of conversations. I wish everything I had to give our daughter was in one little patch. Guest guest
Daytrana is Ritalin in a patch form. The patches are difficult to peel unless you refrigerate them for about 2 minutes before applying but they work for our daughter. Neathery has taken 10 mg. Ritalin orally for years. The pediatrician prescribed the patch in 10 mg, also. The patch delivers 1.1mg of medicine per hour and should be worn for 9 hours. I thought it wouldn't work at all with only 1.1mg being delivered. I was so wrong. It should be applied 2 hours before you need it so the medicine can get into the blood stream. I'm very pleased with the results. I'm giving her the pills on her off days from school - but it has really been amazing to see the difference in the way the same MG of medicine works using a patch. The directions say to put the patch on the hip but tried that and she kept pulling at it when she would pull her pants on and off. I put it on her side - rib cage - and it works great. It's also good because I don't have to worry when to give her meals. She can eat any time and it doesn't affect the absorption of medicine. Guest guest
What is ideal and what is realistic are not always the same; many parents keep the enzymes at the table and manage to get them down before the child starts eating, and that seems to work all right, even though a few minutes before is best. A nice pattern for some kids if you are so inclined is to have a ritualn of the child taking the enzymes and then saying the blessing before diving in. Kids learn they have to have the enzymes first and will ask for them so they can start eating. We just do what we can do, as there are only so many minutes in a morning-before-school period. You just need to make the solution dilute enough so you can give it in the syringe or cup, as most of the nutrients are in powder form. As long as there is no protein in the drink it is OK. As to the probiotics, they are designed to open when the gastric juices hit them - I would not put them in food beforehand, because if sitting in fluid they open and the effectiveness may be gone or at least diminished. As I said, I don't think anything should sit around in fluids (even cold fluids) more than momentarily as you're mixing. Guest guest
Dr. JM, thank you SO much for putting together this list. It is very helpful, and something I will refer to often. Thanks also, , for posting it to the website so I can find it again when I lose it! J Yerly Austin, TX
