The pollution here in Phoenix is pretty bad, I get ill every time I leave

the house.

I have been looking for a place to rent in NW Tucson (close to River Rd &

Oracle) and Oro Valley but no luck so far.

Those of you who live in Tucson-- are there any other areas you know of where

the air is pretty clean? ? North central, north east areas?

Appreciate any info you can give.

I'm in southeast Tucson. I don't often generally have an air pollution problem

here. With the cold, some people have been using fireplaces, but I haven't been

able to get out because of other problems, so their FP use has been a problem

only twice so far-I came back in soon, <G>.

I'm about 13 mile southeast of River and Oracle, for somewhat of a reference

point-close to Pima Community College East, on Irvington Road.

Of course just because I find it okay does not mean you will.

This isn't from firsthand knowledge, but I did hear from someone who

lives there on another list that the San Pedro area in AZ has great air

quality.

Thank you for your response.  Last April I took 3 one-day drives to Cottonwood,

Prescott & Black Canyon City, and Wickenburg; Nov to NW Tucson.  Not everyone

gets symptoms (going by the 'normal' people I know), but I can taste the

pollution on my tongue almost immediately when stepping outside, even when I

have window open a little.

When I 'check out' the pollution in other cities, I drive with my window down

and am outside a lot for approx 4 hours.   In NW Tucson, after that timeframe,

I had mild symptoms-- headache, eyes ,tongue & throat burning, so that tells me

the air there is cleaner than here.  In Phoenix, I have to stay in the house

95% of the time with my air cleaners, mainly run errands or go out for lunch.

If I moved to the Tucson area, I could at least walk around a swap meet for an

hour or two, sit on my patio/have lunch on my patio-- a real treat since I have

been retired a year and a half.

I will check the map for cross streets approx SE of where I was looking.  30

years ago I lived at 22nd St & Craycroft.  If I can't find a rental, then I am

considering buying another mobile home.  I live in one now, no problems unless

I stink up the place with a cleaner-- I am down to just baking soda and

peroxide.

I bought the Shark steam cleaner advertised on TV-- what they don't tell you is

that you can't use steam on a lot of things in the house, so I mainly will try

it on windows and big mirrors for now.  You can't use steam on painted

surfaces, bare wood (my paneling), my faux wood blinds, and a lot of fabrics

(curtains) like faux suede.  I tried using the nozzle to apply steam directly

on my fiberglass tub to remove the baking soda build up-- did not phase it, did

not phase the calcium around my spigots.  When reading more on steam cleaners--

my Shark is a dry steam and dries so fast it does no good for some things.

Later, I may invest in a more expensive steam cleaner-- the tank kind as it is

hard to hold onto the container when I am trying to clean.  I would prefer a

wet steam and go around with paper towels and rags than play around with those

covers Shark has-- and boy are they expensive to replace.

Last winter I bought an IQ Purifier at the eco store here.  It was $900 but it

does well with cleaners in the air and the fireplace smoke (FP stink gets into

the house, thus I bought the IQ).  I also have 3 Austin Healthmates which are

very good, but the IQ is best for chemical odors in the air.  The IQ is on

wheels, very easy to push from room to room.  I use it by day in my living room

and at night push it into my bedroom.

I have a friend who has a mobile home for sale not far from my house.

I've never seen it, and know nothing about it--including size and age.

If you're interested, I can email you his address. They are on Pantano north of

Golf Links and south of 22nd. FWIW, Lincoln Regional park is nearby, with

Clements Center http://www.tucsonaz.gov/parksandrec/clements.pdf . Look at the

map on

http://tucson.citysearch.com/profile/map/32325565/tucson_az/clements_center.html

.. I think their MH is just about where the " D " is, in S Pantano RD, above the

" Star "

Clements Center is the one I've been working to get more fragrance free. Your

presence and help would be greatly appreciated!

Clements Center is the one I've been working to get more fragrance free-- Do you

mean you are trying to get them to use green cleaners?  I will look up the

sites (at the end of your msg) and see if I can get it on my computer-- it is

BADLY need of replacing, outdated, so I can get into maps, etc. since the

beginning of 2009.  I will probably get a custom-built computer again as there

is less chance of extreme offgassing.

If your friend's MH is in a 55+ park and if he has MCS, too, then I appreciate

you giving me his e-mail address.

Tucson Meadows is the only MH park I see on my map, but all the MH parks may not

be on here.

My friend lived in a really nice MH park back when I lived in Tucson (1979-81)

-- it was on or near Golf Links-- the space rent is way, way out of my price

range.

I, of course, can't be sure, but my MCS may have started in Tucson.  I lived in

an apt complex called Los Arboles, NW corner of 22nd St at Craycroft.  I went

to Tucson from back east, was so shocked that everybody sprays inside and

outside every month.  I had only a studio apt, roaches in that complex really

bad.  I kept complaining to mgt, threatened to file a complaint somewhere, so

they had the exterminator track down the nest-- it was in the kitchen of a

studio 2 doors down from my apt.

After that, everywhere I moved in the sunbelt was sprayed monthly, treated for

termites, etc.  I sometimes wonder if I had stay in Pittsburgh if I would not

have MCS.  400+ in my family, and I am the only one with this illness.

What is Clements Center?

They are using greener cleaners. They have a few " Please be Fragrance Free "

signs up, and many, but not all, either use almost no fragrances or very little,

there are those people who still do. I go in the mornings when I can, and now I

run into few problems.

I may have to ask for more accommodations re the treadmill, cross trainer, and

bike. Until I can get there more often and use them, I won't know. Several

people have appreciated the signs and said so. Even to the supervisor, who NEEDS

to know that. The air fresheners have been removed from the workout room and

women's locker room. Don't know about the men's.

I think my friend's park MAY be 55+, don't know. They are not chemically

sensitive, and though I don't know of their use of household cleaners, they

don't AFAIK use many personal care products. They do use some.

I don't know if Tucson Meadows is the name.

Clements Center is part of Tucson Parks and rec. It's a " regional Center " . Has

one newer building that houses a nice fitness room, locker rooms, basketball

court, inside walking track, elevator, lobby, stairs. There's an outdoor pool

next to it. The other building has activity rooms.

Lincoln Park has softball, soccer, and volleyball fields, paved paths, and a

large undeveloped area, several picnic tables. Fred Enke Golf course is next to

it, along with Pima Community College.

I spent a good deal of time in Tucson/Phoenix last spring trying to find a good

location for a friend.

I wasn't happy with the entire area from Tucson to Phoenix. Those mountains box

in the cities and keep the bad stuff from blowing away.

Even Picacho Peak was really bad. And it wasn't just me.....all the other

campers were really sullen and irritable.

Another problem with Tucson is the remnants from the forest fires on Mt. Lemmon

a few years ago.

Chemicals in general don't get to me, but areas that have been burned with fire

retardants are exceptions. My unconfirmed suspicion is that there are

particularly potent molds (mutated) that grow on the chemicals on the trees.

And it's my understanding that some fire retardants cause water to stick to the

trees, providing the standing water + cellulose conditions that allows certain

toxic molds to grow even outside.

The single place near Tucson I liked was Oracle. (Oracle Junction was not good

enough.) Other than that, I had to get all the way east to Benson before the

air got good.

(Another Moldie who spent a winter in Tucson independently picked out Oracle and

Benson as the best places, so I feel pretty confident that I'm accurate in this

assessment for at least some of us. He says Phoenix is worse than Tucson, but I

didn't spent much time in the former myself.)

I didn't find sdale to be as bad as Tucson. Taliesin West was superb. If

I had to live in sdale, I would go up and spend an hour or more sitting on

their patio every day just to " break the response. " If I can get to a really

clear area for even a short chunk of each day, it gives me a lot more ability to

tolerate a greater amount of mold the rest of the time.

Another option is to go north to Happy Valley. I found the whole area (inside

and out) to be quite good. Lots of new retail shops and restaurants there.

Recently farmland. Conceivably a lot of those places will go moldy eventually

and make the whole area go bad, but (at least as of last spring) it was fine.

So that would be my choice, if I had to live in that area.

Best,

I lived in Phoenix, the air wasn't bad but the heat was horrendous so much so

that I had to move back to Los Angeles

The last 3 yrs in Phoenix -- pollution worse than prior years.  It's so bad  I

can taste the pollution on my tongue almost immediately after stepping outside,

then the burning and headache starts.  Thanks to the 'fireplace enthrusiasts',

I now cough for awhile after running errands.

I was in LA twice in the early 80s, before being symptomatic with MCS.  The

pollution there burned my mucous membranes, too, at that time.

I am really boxed in, but I am not giving up.  Long distance drives are hard

for me because of my left knee and right ankle problems, so I have to limit my

trips to check things out.

I lived in sdale 4 yrs ago and loved it.  The air the last few years is

bad everywhere here.  I read somewhere that the pollution drifts west to east

here, and the last 2 trips I made to Mesa and Apache Junction the pollution

seemed to be just as bad as where I live in north Phoenix.

Because of my other health problems I cannot tolerate a cold climate, higher

elevation, need the warm, dry desert.  Also, due to my age, I need things to

be easy, plus I don't have money to buy a house.  BUT, I am not giving up!

I would also like to know about good areas to live that are in closer

proximity to Benson, so that we could be closer to Dr. Gray. We have

our rental here in Sedona until early March, and then I don't know where

we will go, but outside of Tuscan would be a possibility. Would want to

be away from Tuscan and its pollution, higher up where it is cooler in

summer would be more desirable, can't be too remote because that would

freak out my sick family member, absolutely must have wired high speed

internet and cable or satellite tv access, proximity to natural foods

store/organic food also a requirement, some trees around a plus....

Thanks for any ideas of communities or specific rentals.

Sue,I think planet thrive has a real estate section where they also advertise

rentals. I think you can post there also. There are also alot of people on the

list that live in AZ. There is also the safe travel directory website where you

can post for free or check listings. And then there is the mcs shelter list on

. " www.planetthrive.com " " http://www.safertraveldirectory.com/ " Sam

I would also like to know about good areas to live that are in closer
