Guest guest Posted January 22, 2009 Report Share Posted January 22, 2009 Boston Area Resident Spearheads Outreach Efforts for New England Area CMT Patients New England area residents who suffer from Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT) disorder, a debilitating form of hereditary peripheral neuropathy, can participate in the second support group meeting to be held at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center- 330 Brookline Avenue - Boston, MA. on Saturday, January 24, 2009 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Trustman Boardroom, Shapiro Building - Second Floor ( handicapped accessible) Attendees will be treated to a very informative and timely presentation co-produced by Dr. Naven Duggal, CMT Foot and Ankle Specialist, BIDMC and Mike Bonnar: C.O., P.T.A. from NOPCO (National Orthotic and Prosthetics Company. NOPCO is the inventor of the " Boston Brace " ) This presentation will enlighten attendees as to the latest cutting edge technology involving orthotics, bracing, and other supportive devices available to assist CMT patients with mobility and balance issues. Support Group Leader, Mark Boxshus, will also present a video presentation recapping the highly successful Western CMTA Family/Patient/Physician Conference which was held in Palo Alto, CA on November 8, 2008. Additionally, he will discuss the association's newest and " soon to be released " fund raising project - The CMTA Cookbook........ " Alphabet Soup.........The ABC's of Comfort Food for Shattered Nerves " and the importance of group participation. Charcot Marie Tooth Disease affects one in 2,500 people - 2.6 million people worldwide. CMT is a progressive disorder that causes the nerve cells leading to the bodies extremities to slowly degenerate resulting in loss of normal use of the hands/arms and legs/feet. It may also lead to the loss of sensory functions and deformities. CMT strikes all ages, genders, races and ethnicities. People with CMT loose their ability to perform daily activities that are often taken for granted. Sponsored by the Charcot Marie Tooth Association, the New England Chapter is spearheaded Mark Boxshus of Hull who has CMT.
