Here's some more on that story: http://www.russiatoday.ru/features/news/24941 May 19, 2008, 17:33 Ukraine halts deadly vaccination The Ukrainian Ministry of Health has called a moratorium on mandatory vaccination against measles and rubella. The President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, has insisted that vaccination is carried out on a voluntary basis only. This comes after more than 100 pupils were taken to hospital, one of whom died after having been injected with a vaccine from India. Last week Ukraine was shaken by the news of a teenager’s death. Senior pupil Anton Tishchenko died in intensive care in a hospital in the city of Kramatorsk in Donetsk Region after he’d been given the vaccine against measles and rubella (Tresivac ZA 26-X). Later, dozens more teenagers

who’d received the same medication were rushed to hospital in Kramatorsk alone. Similar situations were reported in the cities of Donetsk, Kharkov and Kremenchug amongst others.By Friday night a total of 87 people had been admitted to hospital with the same symptoms: high blood pressure, splitting headache, high temperature and sore throat.Medical officials urged journalists not to spread “unverified frightening stories”. They said that the vaccine from the Indian enterprise Serum Institute of India, which had been delivered to Ukraine as humanitarian aid by UNICEF, is not just safe but considered to be “the best in the world”. They said this vaccine was certificated and registered in Ukraine, but never showed the above mentioned documents to the citizens.Schoolmates of the deceased Anton Tishchenko say they were told that the vaccination was obligatory and urgent. Therefore many of them did not even have the time to inform their parents about the

vaccination.”We’ll do everything not to lose any more lives,” said Vasily Knyazevich, the head of the Ministry of Health. In turn, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has ordered a thorough investigation into the purchasing process of the medication. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AasaMaurine Meleck wrote: opps those hugs and kisses weren't for everyone-that e-mail was only

On May 13, a 17-year-old boy died after measles inoculation in the Donetsk Region. Two days later, over 60 people in eastern Ukraine were hospitalized after vaccination. A total of over 20,000 people in the region received the same vaccine. Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko said he was concerned

over the teenager's death and demanded from the Ukrainian health ministry to take all measures to prevent such instances in the future. By now, measles immunization has been halted in Ukraine. ###

Tresivac is an MMR vaccine: http://www.seruminstitute.com/content/products/product_tresivac.htm TRESIVAC™ Measles, Mumps and Rubella Virus Vaccine Live U.S.P. (Lyophilised) COMPOSITIONTRESIVAC™ is prepared from live attenuated strains of Edmonston-Zagreb Measles virus propagated on human diploid cell

culture, L-Zagreb Mumps virus propagated on chick embryo fibroblast cells and Wistar RA 27/3 Rubella virus propagated on human diploid cell culture. The reconstituted vaccine contains, in single dose of 0.5 ml. not less than 1000 CCID50 of Measles virus 5000 CCID50 of Mumps virus 1000 CCID50 of Rubella virus. Diluent : Sterile water for injection. The vaccine meets the requirements of USP and WHO when tested by the methods outlined in USP and WHO, TRS 840 (1994). INDICATIONSTRESIVAC™ is indicated for active immunization in children of 12 months to 12 years of age against Measles, Mumps and Rubella infections simultaneously. For immunisation of susceptible nonpregnant, adolescent and adult females, we recommend to use R-Vac (Rubella Vaccine) We recommend to use R-Vac (Rubella Vaccine) while observing certain precautions as indicated under the heading CONTRAINDICATIONS.According to committee on Immunisation Indian academy of pediatrics 2001 at present, IAP recommends a dose of MMR vaccine to all children. For infants given Measles vaccine at 9 months, MMR vaccine may be given between 12-15 months of age. If Measles vaccine is given later, a 3 months gap is advisable. If Measles vaccine was missed altogether, one MMR dose replaces it, when given at or after 12 months. The vaccine can be given along with any other vaccine like DPT, OPV but at different sites using different syringes and needles. In adolescents one dose of MMR vaccine at 12-13 years of age (if not given earlier) is recommended. MMR vaccine can also be given to adults at any age in case they have missed the vaccination in childhood and or there is no vaccination record available, by giving 2 doses of MMR with an interval of minimum 4 weeks. However, it is important to note that vaccination in adults can cause higher

percentage of adverse reactions as compared to childhood vaccination. Amongst these the commonly encountered side reactions are unilateral or bilateral parotitis and fever. ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGEThe vaccine should be reconstituted with the diluent supplied (Sterile water for injection) using a sterile syringe and needle. With gentle shaking the dried cake is easily dissolved. After reconstitution the vaccine should be used immediately. A single dose of 0.5 ml should be administered by deep subcutaneous injection into the upper arm. If the vaccine is not used immediately then it should be stored in the dark at 2° - 8°C for no longer than 8 hours. FOR SUBCUTANEOUS USE ONLYSIDE EFFECTSMild fever and rash appearing between days 6 and 14 following the day of vaccination have been reported. Fever is reported in not more than 8% of the vaccinated. Rash is

reported in about 1 to 2% of vaccinated. In about the same proportion of children slight enlargement of cervical and occipital lymph nodes has also been reported. Parotid and other salivary glands enlargement has been reported, but rarely. In the majority of these cases involving enlargement of the salivary glands, the cause was found to be the previous exposure to natural diseases. Reactions involving CNS have been reported in exceptionally rare cases; cause-and-effect relationship between CNS involvement and vaccination was not proved. CONTRAINDICATIONS Pregnancy. Leukaemia, lymphomatoses and other malignant diseases. Severe febrile diseases. Therapy with corticosteroids, radiation, cytostatic drugs and gammaglobulins 3

months prior to vaccination and one and half to three months post-vaccination. History of febrile convulsions or impairment of CNS. History of known hypersensitivity to egg protein. Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine and its component vaccines should not be administered to women known to be pregnant. Because a risk to the fetus from administration of these Live virus vaccines cannot be excluded for theoretical reasons. Women should be counselled to avoid becoming pregnant for 28 days after vaccination with Measles or Mumps vaccines, MMR or other Rubella containing vaccines. HIV INFECTIONTRESIVAC™ may be used in children with known or suspected HIV infection. Although the data are limited and further studies are being encouraged there is no

evidence to date of any increased rate of adverse reactions using this or other measles, mumps and rubella vaccines in symptomatic or asymptomatic HIV infected children. The vaccine should be avoided in other cell mediated immuno deficiency states. PRECAUTIONSDo not administer intravenously. Use carefully in case of hypersensitivity to neomycin. STORAGEStore between +2°C and +8°C. Protect from light, for long term storage a temperature of -20°C is recommended for the vaccine. The diluent should not be frozen, but should be kept cool. PRESENTATIONTRESIVAC™ is presented as lyophilised vaccine 1 dose x 10 vials pack plus diluent (0.5ml Sterile Water for Injection I.P. ) and sterile disposable syringe and needle supplied separately. 2 doses x 10 vials pack plus diluent (iml Sterile Water for Injection I.P. ) And

sterile disposable syringe and needle supplied separately. 5 doses x 50 vials pack plus diluent (2.5ml Sterile Water for Injection I.P. ). 10 doses x 50 vials pack plus diluent (5ml Sterile Water for Injection I.P. ). MOST IMPORTANT WARNING Please ensure that the vaccine is administered by subcutaneous route only. In a rare case anaphylactic shock may occur in susceptible patient and for such emergency please keep handy 1:1000 adrenaline injection ready to be injected intramuscularly. This will help in tackling the anaphylactic shock / reaction effectively.
