Guest guest
Hi, My name is a and I am in need of advice. Since I got exposed to toxic mold, I've been very sensitive to my environment (e.g. no AC, chemicals, carpeting, require open windows or carbon/zeolite air filters, etc. It's affected me in so many ways, including neurologically. I have neurological testing to prove it plus I have a good doctor who is trying to help with appropriate accommodations at the university I am trying to attend. They required me to get additional testing at UCLA, which revealed a reading disorder and memory problems, but they were not authorized to give any environmental suggestions. I have thought of having a videotape of some of the classes or a webcam or online or something for the classes that are affected. I really need this, especially since I got soooo sick last semester without the help and I struggled so much. The school agreed to a longer test time and permission to tape record lectures, but I have trouble getting there in time (always forgetting things) plus the environmental factor. I need to be able to function optimally. My doctor and I have both talked to the director of disability services, yet we have to somehow convince her and her doctor that I have a valid environmental illness and need accommodations....it's so frustrating. The lady in charge has been very difficult with my doctor and I and I don't know what to do...I need to get my life back together...not endanger it....please help! Thanks
Guest guest
a - You may have had undetected " undiagnosed " issues going on for a long time but " compensated " for years and the " mold exposure " just made them almost insurmountable. I went to law school after I was exposed and having taught many special needs kids over the years had a lot of tricks up my sleeve, including tape recording classes. Sitting in the front of the class was very helpful. And never missing one class was important as well. My intense fatigue made it necessary for me to set aside a lot of time to get ready to go out anywhere and night school was a better setting for me than daytime. I had ADD traits all my life, and " compensated " for them, using tapes, recopying notes, flash cards, both home made and commercial ones and audio taped all my classes both before and after the exposure. One real issue was my short term memory and my loss of vocabulary in terms of speaking but not in writing, say on a computer. But the mind is amazing and where there is a will, there is always a way. You need very strong medicals. Extra time is one thing. You could also break up the same time into separate days. Or take a slightly lower credit amount in order to show that you " can " do the work. You may need your neurologist (it sounds like you have had neurological testing) as well as your regular doctor who knew you before and after the exposure and a psychologist or psychiatrist, who know more about learning and the brain, and who can be convincing to the disability services director. They may be able to define what your limits should be for classwork and accommodations for school. Good Luck. > > Hi, > > My name is a and I am in need of advice.
