Guest guest
Helen: What I have found to be true for me is to lead by example. IF I want others to understand what AS means for MY kids or ex-spouse or me is to share my story and walk the walk that is right for me. It won't be right for others. It is simply OUR story which is one in millions. If I want respect, "I" have to earn it as no one can do it for me. That is what awarenes and advocacy is all about. Make your life count for YOU as when U do this, your energy radiates to those around you whether they agree with U or not. Earn the right to become a equal member at the table. Differences are a side bar or label of what is just a part of the whole. Don't allow labels to cloud your vision. Labels are just a word on paper to get services. We are more than that as a human race. We are people first with all the same needs with brains wired differently. Just me.
Guest guest
, This (see 's words below) doesn't always work though. I agree we should earn respect but when there are pre-existing prejudices involved, no amount of earning will change that. This has been proven over and over throughout history. The black people who were made and kept slaves in this countries history didn't do anything to earn that position. They also did in my opinion plenty to earn respect as equal human beings. The slave owners never saw that, it had to be forced on them by war. Even after the war and up to this very day there are areas of the country who still treat black people like subhumans no matter how much good they have accomplished. The Jewish people in Hitler's Germany did not earn being treated like sub humans either. They did much to earn the respect of society... a society that refused to give it to them. This is true of any people group that is different in any way. Earning it isn't always good enough. Earning it only works when the people you are around are decent people who believe in earning respect. If you live with and around small minded and/or evil folk, no amount of hard work and good behavior will help you get their respect. Jennie AS -related to a lot of small minded and some evil people who will never give respect to anyone who is different no matter what that person does or is. >>Make your life count for YOU as when U do this, your energy radiates to those around you whether they agree with U or not.
