It would appear that 12,000 people in NY do not share your opinion. Is

that really a problem? How much energy is one to spend attacking

other autism groups, especially if that autism group sounds an awful

lot lately like other autism groups you like? By going negative, do

you create awareness, or just counter-productive confusion?

My point: it is ok to attack bad goals, tactics and objectives, but

not ok to attack the groups themselves who do these things. For

example, we can say that funding genetic research over environmental

research is a bad idea. We can also say that collaborating with

duplicitous public health agencies is stupid for a number of reasons.

But we don't directly have to attack the groups who do these things

-- just support the groups who do the right things in the first place.

Quite honestly, I don't think it's because 12,000 people do not share

's opinion. It's because 12,000 people just want to help Autism

and see AS as the most obvious way to do it.

There were a few on our bus to the GOV rally who had no idea about the

controversy with AS. But after talking to the rest of us, boy they

changed their tune!

As we all know there are many parents who feel that their child's

autism is purely genetic and AS is exactly the organization for them.

But I know of many parents who do believe their child was vaccine

injured and had no idea about the story with or how AS

spends their money.

I think your logic is faulty here. Your two statements do not

contradict each other.

If many of the 12,000 knew what most of us know about AS maybe they

wouldn't be supporting AS.

You said that 12,000 people must not think it's bullshit.... well

maybe it's because the majority of the 12,000 don't have a clue about

what AS is " about " . They're just there to support autism and are

blind to the inner workings of AS.

I don't believe in bashing other organizations, but I certainly don't

see a problem with educating the public about the groups they are

supporting. If after they hear AS's history and they still want to

support them, then so be it.

Forgive me if I'm not making sense... maybe too much time in the sun

today!

You've spent a good deal of time attacking AS yourself, so don't act

like you have a halo over your head.

They CLAIM to do these things, but they don't, and you know that's

More...........

They took $1 million out of Pittsburgh over the weekend -- which

nobody in Pittsburgh will end up seeing helping an actual child with

autism. It'll go to some lame ass genetic research project or

something that involves drugging our kids with strattera or risperdal

to " control " them.

You just can't walk safely on the edge of a sword's blade. Pick a

side or you're going to get cut.

Lenny you know, even if the research is done it can be skewed any way they want why was katie not at the rally ? and mrs. wright AS her self. In case you forgot throwing their daughter under the bus And not telling anybody that christian got better, or how he got better. I don’t know. You’ll have to ask the organizers. They might not have invited her. Plus, she’s not one to get up and talk in front of crowds. We invited her to do the keynote at our conference last year and she declined. She did attend though and said a few, quick words (we gave her an award).

I don’t think her mom was there. But, I haven’t confirmed that.

Has there been a shift in the wind and now we're hoping that AS will

get with the progam if we're nice to them? It didn't work in the days

before many of our groups figured out AS's angle. The fact that AS

has Hollander as science director alone (and the list of concerns

goes on) places the group firmly in the " bad egg " catagory as far as

I'm concerned and they deserve criticism for this. I probably should

have said they (the directorship) were like Nixon on " Laugh In " . Sock

it to me. Bleah.

And I do support the groups that do good-- partly by wishing that

some of the funds that AS is mopping up were going to legitimate

research NOW, not at some undesignated point in the misty future. I'm

sure that will gently prevail in the end, but as things

currently stand over there, my kids don't have time to wait.

Hello - No halo over my head. This is not about me personally, I

wish it were that simple. I am trying to raise some issues about tactics.

First of all, I am careful that I challenge goals and objectives --

over flat out name bashing and personal attacks (although I am not shy

from using ridicule occasionally, I admit, for effect). I make no

bones that I do not trust AS, but I don't make a career out of bashing

them into compliance towards my point of view.

My point here is that I cannot see much difference now, when it comes

to marketing, tactics and rhetoric, between AS and other national

autism organizations. They are all sounding alike, even if they are

not.

Seems that all now SAY they want more biomedical/environmental

research. They all feel quite at home collaborating with high level

government/ public health officials responsible for the epidemic.

Perhaps the answer is to not so much spend energy berating mediocre

autism organizations, but rather create and support effective ones.

really a moot point. As you recall, her parents threw her under the

over again, they'd probably NOT align themselves with NAAR.

It's hard to go up against those with such power and wealth. AS talks

the talk, but they don't walk the walk.

So while it may be difficult to distinguish these groups to the

average joe -- the educated joe knows the difference. I'm not sitting

in a circle, holding hands and singing kumbaya with them. If you want

to create change, you have to rock the boat.

Rock on.

I kind of like to think that the only way some change will happen with

AS is if they are shamed into it.

This is why I don't think twice about telling my feelings when asked.

I won't hesitate to suggest other organizations where donations would

actually go towards helping families not redundant research or lavish

expenses.

you say " I honestly don't think it's 's parents, either.

I think it's the idiots from NAAR. I would bet that if the s

had to do it all over again, they'd probably NOT align themselves

with NAAR. "

I say nothing is furhter from the truth. And personaly If I had to

do it over I would vote against the merger.

I like to think that the s got into this before they saw the

benefits their grandson was getting biomedically and when they tried

to take AS's research in that direction they were railroaded by the

NAAR folks. It could be that their hands are tied for awhile. But

until theres a change, there will be NO changing MY mind about AS.

Interesting Marty. Why would you vote against the merger?

rocking the boat only gets you so far. Lenny's advice is sound.

It may be more difucult for some but " ...not spend so much energy

berating mediocre autism organizations, but rather create and support

effective ones. " is the way to go.
