Subject: STEPS! || Happy Holidays from Dance Parade!! December 17, 2008 thisMonth! :: Mark your calendar Saturday, May 16, 2009 :: “The dance is a poem of which each movement is a word. " ~Mata Hari Happy Holidays from Dance Parade RE: Introducing Genre Buzz In this issue, we introduce Genre Buzz, a new monthly article in STEPS!. Each month this article will spotlight a specific genre of dance from those registered in this year's Parade — its history, current trends, how to get involved, and of course who's performing in this year's Parade. The debut article focuses on Belly Dance — a genre already with four organizations and 37 dancers registered in the 2009 Dance Parade. The name ‘Belly Dance’ is really not the proper name of this genre - it is the American name of it. The dance itself does not belong to one geographical location, hence it holds several names. Raqs Sharqi, Danse Orientale (both literally meaning ‘the dance of the East’) or Raqs Baladi (‘dance of the country’) are some of the names that are used in Middle East and Turkey. The dance is done by the entire body and the focus is on gracefulness, fluidity, strength and being in harmony with the music, using one’s body as an instrument. One of the great aspects of this dance is that it is accessible to all, old young, men and women. One does not need to be a lithe ballerina. Belly dancing is done in many parts of the world today and there are many Belly Dance companies in New York. Some of the artists and dance companies already registered for New York Dance Parade 2009 are: Athena Najat Dance Company of Greece, Chilaires and Dance of Venus of Turkey, Manhattan Tribal, Fringe Benefit, and Culturelle Assocition Etoile d’Algerie (Algerian Folkloric). See a complete list of Belly Dance participants at danceparade.org. (written by Chilaires) RE: We are One Parade – Many Cultures!! Having recently opened registration for our third annual parade on May 16th 2009, we are on course to break previous records with the most diverse parade yet. We now have 642 dancers from 24 groups signed up for the parade who will be featuring 17 forms of dance: Dominican, Ballet, Funk, Salsa, Square Dance, Cumbia, Algerian, Tap Dance, Break Dance, Belly Dance, Nia, House, Roller Disco, Korean Contemporary, Modern, African, Hip-Hop and Zouk. Don't see your genre yet, register today. Our goal is to gather 200 groups and 7,000 dancers—With your help we can do it. Spread the Word! RE: New Year Resolution 2009: Dance in Dance Parade! This year Dance Parade is leading New York City's involvment in International Dance Day, and we want you to be a part of it! International Dance Day (World Dance Day) is celebrated on April 29 through promotion by UNESCO for all types of dance. The holiday was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute. The date was suggested by Pyotr Gusev to commemorate the birthday of Jean-s Noverre. Dance Parade will celebrate the 2009 International Dance Day by producing a 'Funraiser’ event 3 weeks prior to the Dance Parade and Festival, which include performances and more. Artists who wish to perform MUST be registered with Dance Parade. Invitation to perform is a first registered, first invited basis. (Whoever registered first gets invited). We love you all, but we will only choose one dancer / dance group from each dance genre - so go register now! Please register on the Dance Parade website www.danceparade.org. If you are interested in performing, please email . In the subject bar of your email please write IDD 2009. You will be sent the application to apply to perform in this event. Final Decision will be made by Tuesday, March 31, 2009 RE: Come to an Outreach Evening! DO YOU WANT TO DANCE IN THE PARADE? DO YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER? QUESTIONS ABOUT DANCE PARADE? The 2008 Dance Parade and Festival brought so many artists together in an environment that particularly benefited professional dancers - of all genres!! It also brought together many wonderful and dedicated volunteers who continue to help make dance an important part of communities and cultural landscapes everywhere. Since the Parade we have received scores of emails that celebrate the many collaborations, connections, jobs, and new friendships created between dance groups across the dance spectrum as that occurred during the Parade and Festival! We watched artists talk to each other and exchange business cards, stories, and experiences while waiting to March / Dance in the Parade or while warming up back stage at the Festival. That is inspiring!! And you, the Volunteers helped make this happen, NONE OF THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT YOU!!! You are a vital and precious part of Dance Parade and we are so grateful, appreciative and… in awe of the dedication and hard work each of you give each year. Historically the arts have gone through periods of endangerment, sadly, in this place and time in history, art is endangered. Especially the performing arts that can’t sell a cola, car , or ideology in less than 2 minutes and …make a million dollars. Your work helps preserve the essence of community and culture. Directly or indirectly you help put inspiration into the lives of so many people in 2008, which is so powerful. We feel so privileged to have met each and every one of you.We have so much gratitude and recognize the time and effort you gave to the Dance Parade organization this past year. We look forward to meeting more people this year and, of course, seeing all of you again in 2009. We look forward to your enthusiasm and dancing with you in 2009! Thank you again to EVERYONE! All of you are so amazing! Have a Happy New Year! (and make sure you do some dancing too!) Re: Office Space Wanted! As an emerging non-profit Dance Parade is in need of office space. Each year a core team of nearly 20 volunteers works for up to eight months planning the Parade. Having a shared office space enables us to build a more collaborative team that produces an even stronger Parade. We are looking for donated office space in Manhattan that can accommodate at least 12 people, has internet access, basic office furniture, and is available evenings and weekends. If you have a space or know anyone who does please contact Greg Join, Volunteer, Donate www.danceparade.org 2008 Financial Sponsors, thank you!: 2009 Media Sponsor: & amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href= " http://www.countdownr.com " mce_href= " http://www.countdownr.com " & amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Countdownr & amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a & amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; <hr size=1 width= " 50% " noshade color=black align=center> Change email address / Leave mailing list Hosting by YourMailingListProvider
