Guest guest
Although I do not go to PT, I have talked with PT's, and in the past have tried to do some " exercise " . I would have to say the SINGLE most important thing PT has done for me is to know that keeping our core strong will help to keep our balance and strength, even though they progressively diminish. MUSCLE MEMORY is also interesting, with electro stimulation the memory comes back and I have regained some movement in my feet/ankles. Guest guest
It helped me so much. It increased my walking ability a lot including speed, being able to walk backwards again, range of motion. Bobbie
Guest guest
gretchen, the most inportant thing the pt has done for me is to get me trying different things, and just get me moving. my husband has problems with RA among other things, and he does not do anything but watch tv. i will not be like that. i have been trying things with PT and walking, the last 6 weeks, so the 3 G's - get up, get dressed, get out are for me. tina cmt1a michigan _________________________________________________________________ Get your vacation photos on your phone! http://windowsliveformobile.com/en-us/photos/default.aspx? & OCID=0809TL-HM
Guest guest
Hi Gretchen, I had PT for my back after a fall. I learned how to move properly so as to reduce injury, i.e. getting in/out of a car/chair/bed, etc. I also learned the proper technique for applying ice and heat after a flare-up. I had PT other times, for leg injury and back pain, but received no benefit.. With leg injury, I could not regain lost strength even after a year of PT. We didn't know I had CMT. Guest guest
Yoga, via yogatuneup, will do this too. I have regained large portions of balance, coordination, strength, proprioception and achieved great weight loss (+/- 30 pounds, mostly without leaving the floor.) Kriya yoga, which is one of the meditation methods, has also done much to help keep the world from encroaching in on me, as losing continuously all these things above has been overwhelming for the past 40 years. Guest guest
Amen, Gretchen! PT has never really done anything for me but send me big bills! I use the same approach...get up, get dressed and GET OUT! Once I start moving I am so motivated to get things done. Guest guest
The PT's I have gone to in the past were not familiar with CMT and I felt I was explaining everything to them and THEN had to pay them. I went online instead to get exercises. I had a problem with my SI joint and with the help from a cortisone shot and stretching exercises at home, I am lucky that's all I need (at least for now)! Karon in San Diego It helped me so much. It increased my walking ability a lot including speed, being able to walk backwards again, range of motion. Guest guest
I had PT as a kid and it didn't do anything for me so I was taken out of the program.
Guest guest
This is a very good question. I am now doing one exercise --- using my toes to grab the floor benefit of this exercise ----I can do this exercise everywhere, anytime, This exercise works for me. I feel my feet and legs have more strength. Caroline Liu Taiwan
Guest guest
I too had tried physical therapy 20 years ago and after trying to use the lap bands and a couple of other small exercises, they said they really could not help me and tha physical therapy was not for me (what BS) Now I started physical therapy 6 months ago with someone who understands neurological problems and had worked with many people over the last 30 years including many with MS. Well, I just got back from a vacation to my home town and most of my family and friends had not seen me in 9 months and all commented on how much better I was walking, that I was not waddling as much and seemed to be walking straighter with more confidence. What I have noticed is: Increased muscle mass in my quads Better balance Ability to sometimes catch myself from falling (was never able to do this before) Better endurance Ability to ride a stationary bike (was unable to even keep my feet in before or do more than one rotation) And the single most important: GAVE ME HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
