A question for those out there with CMT kids and those who grew up with CMT.

Do you tell the school and have your child 'classified with an IEP'. We just

spoke with my sons dr and he had reservations about getting the school

'involved'. Am I crazy to think the school should be aware and involved with any

issues my son may have?

DO I just tell them and not get an IEP or is an IEP the way to go? He really

does not have any special needs or considerations at the moment but may not be

able to write for as long as some kids and run around at gym class for as long

etc. In two years his new school has stairs he will need to traverse multiple

times a day, which may

be difficult. Also he needs OT therapy.

Should I go through the school with this or do it privately? We do PT privately

now. I am also concerned witht hings like the presidential physical fittness

test the kids are required

to do every year. My son cannot run a mile and this is one of the

requirements. Should he just run as much as he can and walk the rest?

Sorry for all the questions but thought I would try and figure this out before

school starts in 6 weeks.

Lori,

Working Very closely with many different Special ed kids has made me very aware

of their needs. In my opinion you should go for an IEP, to allow for the

physical needs to be addressed. The doctor can write a note to the school

stating this is what this child needs,  to be able to function to the best of

their abilities. Things like standing in the lunch lines, writing for a long

period of time, running, can be modified or eliminated if you are honest with

the school. You can also request the this material is only for the teachers to

inspect to make the necessary accommodations.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.
