Guest guest
Hi Kay, Oh this is not an easy one for those of us with CMT. Since cancer runs in our family I have the same question in the back of my mind. I was thinking that antibiotics can help fight a pneumonia complication. At this point in time we don't have a treatment for peripheral neuropathy complication. For me it would depend on the quality of life after chemo. My friend had a heart transplant and the 10 years it gave her were not the best years. I am sorry you have to go through this.
Guest guest
Hi Kay, I have been thinking about you so much. While I have zero experience with this, I am wondering if, to prevent the pneumonia, you could be given antibiotics? Just a thought. Count on my prayers! Guest guest
Kay..I will keep praying for you as I am with my daughter also..... Blessings Geri Hi friends, Because the cancer spread to my lymph nodes, and the type of cancer I have, the treatment has unfortunately changed. Please pray for me to have wisdom on what to do... Here are my concerns regarding the treatments. The Pros Cons of radiation... Effectively reduces risk of breast cancer recurrence May cause fatigue and skin problems . May sometimes cause serious side effects, such as swelling in the arm, inflammation of the lung or heart damage. s small long-term risk of secondary cancers. Requires minor surgery to implant radiation devices for internal radiation. Daily treatment for 6 to 7 weeks, driving to Portland. The big challenge is... my lungs are already compromised. After my Oncologist appointment yesterday, I found out there is only one type of chemo that would work for my cancer... which May give me a 15% more chance if I took it. It also Would cost me my independence, and maybe my life. The Chemo would affect my peripheral nerves which are also already compromised by CMT. 1-A So, it is a " No " for Chemo. Now I am really weighing every option when it comes to radiation.. I am researching more, and waiting to talk to my pulmonary doctor.. There is a chance radiation could cause a life threatening pneumonia due to my compromised lungs. Please pray that I am aware enough to hear God, and for me not to make a decision out of fear... Life is, what it is. If it's my time, it is...if not... YEHA! Be well... Kay

Guest guest
Hi Kay, So glad to hear from you. I too have been thinking about you a lot...wondering how you are doing...thinking it's been about 5 weeks since your surgery and hoping you'd be well enough to get back on the computer soon. I'm so sorry you are faced with such difficult medical decisions right now. I second what Gretchen said, that I have no experience to advise on a treatment plan, but you can definitely count on me for support. When you talk to the pulmonary doctor, perhaps you can ask if there is anything they can do preventively to reduce the likelihood of pnemonia from developing. For example, would preventive steroid treatment and/or other anti-inflammatory treatment, concurrent with the radiation treatments, prevent the pneumonia from developing? What about sleeping position? Breathing devices? Hourly coughing exercises? Etc. And if pneumonia did develop, would antibiotics likely knock it down? Sending wishes for wisdom and recovery your way...
Guest guest
Thank you , I printed out your post and am taking it to my doctor. Thank you. I am always amazed on how much knowledge, and compassion that you provide on our forum. I saw a Neurologist this week... when I walked out the only thing I thought was.... A nice doctor, but Thank God, for Gretchen and everyone in our group. Have a great day! Kay
Guest guest
Kay, I called your brother the other night when I ran across an old post of his regarding tendon transfer surgery. He is a wonderful man, as I am sure you know. He mentioned your battle and hard choices, and I have been praying for you along with lots of other people in this group. You continue to bless all of us with your strength, wisdom, serenity and courage. I wish I had sound advice for you, but I can certainly pray that you will be inspired with the knowledge of how to best proceed from here. Love and prayers, J.
