Guest guest
Can anyone tell me if you can be spammed into membership in a yahoo group? I was under the impression that you had to sign up or click on the " join " this group button and then go through all the disclosures. , totally illiterate in computer technology
Guest guest
A group owner can add an email address to the membership. Also group owners can invite people to join. > > Can anyone tell me if you can be spammed into membership in a yahoo > group? This has been discussed here, awhile ago. There's a company(?), group, ...something, called " Grouply " . Wants to be the " Next New Thing " in social networking. It says. But many (most by now?) legitimate forums, list-serves and so on have *BANNED* Grouply -- as has ASPIRES. Trouble is, once *one* subscriber to a List suckers for the pitch, " Grouply " has access to ALL INFO (addresses & passwords) for the *ENTIRE GROUP*. ...Clever scam. Often, the " pitch " seems to be coming from a group-member you *know*. And sometimes it is - modern naivety being what it is. More often it's " Grouply " pulling the strings without a member's knowledge. Maybe it isn't even called " Grouply " anymore. Whatever... The *idea* behind the scheme is floating around the 'net, and The Bad Guys continue trying everything they can get their hands on. > I was under the impression that you had to sign up or click on > the " join " this group button and then go through all the disclosures. > > , totally illiterate in computer technology - Bill, 76, AS -- WD " Bill " Loughman - Berkeley, California USA http://home.earthlink.net/~wdloughman/wdl.htm
Guest guest
Hi Bill ., thanks for mentioning " Grouply " .... DO NOT JOIN GROUPLY. Folks who join it will, unfortunately be banned from this list until such time as they sign on under a new email address, as Grouply will have now hijacked their yahoo identity. If you are reading this and going " huh? " just ask and I'll re-post an older warning about this insidious " free " " email manager. " , I'm thinking that probably did not happen in your case though. However, you, perhaps wound up as a member of a Yahoo discussion group without going through the motions of applying? Had you made a request to join a Yahoo group recently? Eg. this one? Our list-owner will subscribe some folks who request a membership by contacting her privately. Usually, though, one either applies through the Yahoo group itself or is invited to join, and in either case then you go through their interface which involves deciphering a series of letters or numbers that are displayed in a way prevent auto spammers but sometimes confound real members too. <grins!> I myself don't automatically subscribe members but would if they were having severe problems with trying to get past the " puzzle page " as one member recently did (U know you U are ...<hugs!>) AT any rate, if someone does not want to be a member here but has problems un-subscribing, the moderators can do that for you, just ask us. - Helen

Guest guest
> > I'm going huh! so can you please post that warning? > Thanks > Elaine Here is the warnings that I posted on Aug. 23. - Helen Hi all, There is a serious privacy concern regarding a " free " email service called " Grouply. " Many Yahoo groups members are receiving invites to join " Grouply " and it's only a matter of time before you will too. I moderate another AS group, and one of our members signed up for " Grouply " after being " invited " - " personally " - or so he thought - by a member of another group. Subsequently, all members of our group received spam email " originating " from this one member's email address, purporting to be a personal invitation from him to join Grouply. " Grouply " claims to consolidate all your Yahoo e-groups to make them easier to manage. Since the message contains your email address and your Yahoo ID, it would almost appear to be a Yahoo add-on. However, this " service " is NOT a Yahoo service nor is it endorsed by Yahoo. It is a " phishing " scam and though right now it only targets Yahoo groups members, in the future it may to expand to other social networking sites. The message will ask you to provide your Yahoo password. NEVER give out your Yahoo password. Yahoo would not ask you to do this. Once it has your Yahoo ID and password, you have effectively made them a member of every Yahoo e-group you belong to because it now has YOUR Yahoo identity. It has the capability to go into all of your Yahoo group's membership lists and harvest ALL members email addresses and their Yahoo IDs. It can then spam all members using your email address. Yahoo Group List owners have been banning Grouply members since this is the only way to stop spam from the member's email address. The member then has to change their email address in order to re-join the group. Bottom line: DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO GROUPLY. No need for panic - but don't subscribe to that group if you get an invitation. As with anything you get in an email, if you are suspicious, " Google " it and find out what it's all about before you join. - Helen
