Adelle wrote of the perils of drinking too much anything that doesn't

replace electrolytes back in the 60's. Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit goes into the

fallacy of drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day. I would think if the good Drs

replaced soda with distilled water the results would be pretty much the same

especially if one is perspiring heavily and hydrating with fluids containing

little or no salts. So much for doing a literature review before publishing.

Chugging liters of cola may cause muscle harm

Greek doctors say swilling huge amounts of soda daily is not so uncommon

http://www.msnbc. msn.com/id/ 31130076/

Drinking several liters of cola-containing soft drinks per day can cause a

chronic depletion of potassium in the body, leading to muscle weakness and even

paralysis, according to Greek doctors.

While you might think that " excessive soft drink consumption at this level is so

rare that it is not a public health issue, " writes the author of an accompanying

editorial in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, " we have every

reason to think that it is not rare. "

Dr. Moses f and associates at the University of Ioannina, Greece identified

six reports of cola-induced potassium deficiency published since 1994.

Quantities of cola consumed ranged from 2 to 9 liters per day.

Muscle complaints ranged from mild weakness to profound paralysis, and all

patients had abnormally low potassium levels in the blood.

" Fortunately, " f and colleagues write, " all patients had a rapid and

complete recovery after the discontinuation of cola ingestion and the oral or

intravenous supplementation of potassium. "

In his editorial, Dr. Clifford D. Packer at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA

Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, comments that " there is very little doubt

that tens of millions of people in industrialized countries drink at least 2-3 L

of cola per day. "

Packer stresses that " the soft drink industry needs to promote safe and moderate

use of its products for all age groups, reduce serving sizes, and pay heed to

the rising call for healthier drinks. "

Hi O,

I've heard that consuming large amounts of caffeine daily can leach calcium from

the bones, but I haven't heard of it removing potassium from the body.

Would you mind posting medical journal data in support of this?  I'd be

interested in reading it.

Thanks!

Caffeine causes the body to purge potassium, so I can see how soda could be

worse than water in that aspect.

,

Google " caffeine potassium " and you'll get all the info you need.

BTW, I've known two people to be hospitalized when attempting a liquid diet,

thinking that included drinking coffee. They both had heart attack symptoms and

both were depleted of potassium.

Hi O,

Your personal experiences and the article Gretchen posted support the idea that

we should do 'all things in moderation'.

Chugging liters of anything can be harmful, even if it's just water!

However, just because something is harmful in excess, doesn't mean that it's

harmful in moderation.

Studies done in 2002 showed that coffee & tea don't dehydrate, as was previously

believed.

More recently, studies have shown that caffeinated beverages, especially coffee,

can have beneficial health effects (antioxidants, increased ability to exercise,

etc.)  But this is only true when consumed in moderation.

I think we all agree that anything done to excess can be harmful.

Yes, if you ate too much money, it would hurt you!

As for HAVING too much money, I'm not so sure.  I think there are a lot of us,

including me, who would like to be first in line to sign up for a research study

on that topic!

LOL! However, have you read the stories about the big Lottery winners and how

many go downhill after having so much money. I admit, it would be nice but I

would be VERY careful and, of course, contribute it all to finding the cure of

CMT!

Hi Geri,

We did have a detailed discussion about this topic a few months ago.  To read

the conversations, you can search " aspartame " or " phenylalanine " .

This is a controversial subject.  Here's info on Wiki regarding this

controversy:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspartame_controversy

Someone wanting to research this for themselves should evaluate the evidence,

i.e. read the actual research studies rather than trusting everything posted on

the Internet, where inaccuracies, myths, outdated information, and

profit-mongers abound.

But as we've been discussing, even 'safe' things can be harmful in large

quantities.
