Hi Ann,

We live in Florida too and rent a place that was newly built. I suggest you get

an air test wherever you live.

people on the board here rent or do you just take your chances with purchasing a

place and hope there isn't mold behind the drywall?

Ann,

Search for a qualified professional who is a member of one of

these organizations. They are all non-profit's who don't sell

products, chemicals or services. They educate and train their

members. That doesn't mean the members are automatically

ethical or competent or that they have the knowledge and skills

you need, but it increases the chances they do.

There are all kinds of air tests for all kinds of substances other

than mold. Any test of any kind should be made only after a

careful inspection to determine what is likely to be there and what

type of test is required.

Be careful of those who just take mold samples and those who

provide the numbers without an interpretation. There is no way to

reliably interpret them by the numbers alone and certainly not by

the lay person. It requires a specific question to be asked which

the test can answer. Also, if mold doesn't show up in the sample

then something is wrong. Mold spores and fragments are

everywhere all the time and should be found in any type of

sample.

The key is to determine if there is mold *growing* inside the

house, not just mold spores from who knows where. If you are

reactive to other things like chemicals, danders, pollens a

reaction may be to those instead or in addition to mold.

Finally, the typical samples only find mold spores and some

fragments. They do not, and cannot, detect the proteins,

enzymes, MVOCs, glucans and a handful of other components of

mold growth which cause reactions.

I wish there were a simple method but there isn't. Especially since

what may be safe for one person won't be safe for another. This

is why just testing isn't sufficient to determine safety.

Because others have tested successfully, perphaps they can

recommend (offline) who they used.

Hah! Florida? mold you must be kidding. Forget it. Don't buy anything. What I

never hear talked about is the up-regulation of this illness. If you do manage

to recover, and I have several times, another exposure to mold will up-regulate

you, making you sicker-quicker, until like me you have no money left, and cannot

live in a home at all, and must camp for the rest of your life. So preserve what

you have, live outside for at least 2 years after recovery, and don't put money

into any structure, you will most definitly have to move again, and very few

posessions, use boxes for coffee-tables. No one will believe me, but I speak the

truth anyway

Especially after all the storms since 2004.  Mold free place in Florida a joke.

Not even the air outside is any better.  Even people who think they had no water

intrusion probably had.  Soon will know they had some.  Then there is the

chinese drywall issue.  Tthousands of homes with that problem. Finding a place

here is a nightmare, so bteween mold, and drywall finding a safe place .........

God Bless !!
