Guest guest
Sam, Do you know what the carbon blanket made of (besides the carbon)? I've been considering buying one for a while but worry about what is used to hold the carbon together. None of the websites that I've looked up mention this. Also, you asked me about references to ALA and thyroid. I only found one study, but have asked people I know and on my thyroid group. One person on my group found that more than 300 mgs a day lowered his thyroid hormone level. Another person who gets ALA IVs at my clinic every week hasn't had a problem with her thyroid levels and she no longer has a thyroid. So I think it's very individual. I just bought two new thyroid books (one with the most up-dated research) and ALA isn't mentioned. For now I'm not using ALA. Anne > > > Re: mattress: Ella, did you try putting mattress and box springs in plastic zippered covers, or does plastic bother you? I have alot of allergies and put the old mattress set in that. I have to get rid of some old furniture too. >
Guest guest
Hi Anne, That is a good question. I'm sorry to say, I don't know. I did pull this off of the Nontoxic website: " Activated carbon fiber felt for blankets is made from one kind of special materials from natural anthracite by carbonization and activation with large surface area, large pore volume and pore distribution. It has the features of large adsorption volume, fast adsorption speed, heat-resistance, acid resistance and alkaline resistance. The regeneration for activated carbon fiber is convenient. The adsorption capacity keeps almost same after many times of regeneration. It is widely used in solvent recovery, air purification, water treatment, gas masks, cigarette filtration, nuclear air cleaning system, ozone elimination filter, gasoline fumes, vaporization protection for cars. Composition. Its structure is like flakes of graphite micro-crystal built up at random. The average micro-crystal size is very small. Chemical name: Activated carbon fiber Chemical formula: Predominantly C Ingredients: 100 % C Hazards " " http://www.nontoxic.com/activatedcarbonblanket/activatedcarbonblanket.h\ tm " I know that I had no reaction to the blanket. What we did was buy a hypoallergenic mattress cover and insert the carbon blanket on top of the mattress inside the cover. So, we never make contact with it. But I think it did help reduce any off-gassing. We got this when we had to leave our house and we had to get a new mattress as anything used was moldy and worse. We could not afford a non-toxic mattress so I opted for a serta set for about $600, which said they did not use any fire retardants (probably only the tip of the iceberg as far as what chems are in the mattress, but better than those that do have fire retardants). Here is the link from where I bought the carbon blanket. I would suggest calling the owner of the site, Daliya Robson @ 1-800-968-9355. She will usually try to find out whatever info she can, even calling the manufactorer if she doesn't know the answer. You can also email her too. But I'd suggest a call. She has mcs so is familiar with what we go through.I, of course, have NFI in her business. If you find any further info on this, please let me know. If I can help you with any more info, please let me know too. We may have to break down and get a sofa, as we've been sitting on metal outdoor chairs which is killing our backs. Nothing used is safe so far, and new stuff stinks. Wish we could afford something non-toxic. It might be trickier to use the carbon blankets for apoulstry as haven't fond anything commercial that doesn't use fire retardants and it would be harder to enclose a sofa than a mattress. I could use a carbon blanket covered in a non-toxic duvet or between two sheets; but don't know how effective that would be. The reason for covering the blanket in part is due to that if you sweat on it the carbon will come off on you or the furniture. Not a tragedy, but will preserve the blanket a bit better and the apoulstry if you do. Has anyone had to deal with reducing off-gassing of apoulstry? The quandary of this is the reason we've held off for so long. Thanks for your info on ALA. I would say that if one can handle it and it is as helpful as some say, it would be worth the temp. reduction in thyroid levels as long as it is carefully monitored. Hope this is helpful,Sam Do you know what the carbon blanket made of (besides the carbon)? I've been considering buying one for a while but worry about what is used to hold the carbon together. Guest guest
Hi Sam, thanks for your reply. I also have very little furniture. Instead of a sofa I am thinking of having a welder in my area make me a daybed. On top of that would go what I slept on for years - metal innersprings, cotton blankets and a wool pad. The advantage of the daybed is that it has a back and you can put pillows against it. Haven't committed myself to the project yet, but I can't think of a better alternative. I will check out the info you gave me on the carbon blanket. Thanks. Anne On Nov 29, 2009, at 1:05 PM, Sam wrote: > Hi Anne, > > That is a good question. I'm sorry to say, I don't know. Guest guest
Why would you not just use a metal bedframe and put your springs on that? Guest guest
Sam , There is a company that makes futons out of poplar wood you could have finished with a safe coat. They were not too expensive last time I looked.     God Bless !! dragonflymcs Mayleen ________________________________ From: sparksella <sparksella@...> Sent: Sun, November 29, 2009 10:17:40 PM Subject: [] Re: Carbon blankets and ALA  Why would you not just use a metal bedframe and put your springs on that? Guest guest
Had you thought of a futon? They come in wood or metal. Dr. Rea has them in his housing and the mattresses are organic cotton. Can be used open into a double bed or closed as a sofa. I slept on it for a year, no problems. They are not that expensive.
