Guest guest
Group, Here is the response Wyndham received from the PURE room people responsible for the Wyndham hotel rooms. Please note that this did not come from OLGear, the ozone company which posted the press release (apparantly to tout ozone). Also note how quickly they responded. That in itself is good news. I'm much relieved by 's response and by the fact Evy at Wyndham quickly sought answers. I anticipate these rooms to be much improved over others but I still have specific concerns for the more sensitive amoung us. Check it out and ask questions - of any hotel room. If you react to something politely notify the front desk and ask for a different room or other accomodations. I have found hotels in general much more responsive the last 2 years than they used to be. I have stayed at other hotels using the PURE program (or similar) and except for the ozone issue they are usually much better. The biggest culprit in other hotels is still the " air freshener " housekeeping is instructed to spray on everything. Including the pillows at times! Once I'm in an acceptable room I don't let housekeeping back in unless I'm there. Carl Grimes Healthy Habitats LLC ------- Forwarded message follows ------- Evy, Thank you for sharing this with me. These gentlemen bring up very valid concerns. We are well aware of the California regulations and the timing required for compliance. Mr. Grimes is correct, the legislation was passed in October of 2008. However, there is a compliance schedule that I have cut and pasted from their web site that we are well within. See below: Manufacturers have two compliance dates to meet. First, as required by Section 94807, manufacturers must notify their distributors, retailers, and sellers about the regulation, and provide copies of the final regulation to them. They must provide documentation to the ARB that this has been accomplished by October 18, 2009.Second,all air cleaner models marketed or sold in California must be tested, certified, and labeled as required by the regulation by October 18, 2010. These gentlemen are also correct that ozone, even at low levels can be quite harmful. Our selection process for the purifiers that we use was quite rigorous. Our purifiers have been tested for ozone levels down to .01 parts per million and showed no readable levels at that test point. The California regulation requires a purifier to produce less than .05 parts per million according to Title 17, Sections 94800 - 94810, of the California Code of Regulations.....so we have been tested to a level well below the regulation level. In addition, our units are registered with the FDA as a Class II Medical Device. In order to maintain this certification, the units and manufacturing process is audited every year and re-certified. However, the proof is in the pudding, as they say, and our purifiers will need to be certified in CA under the new regulations. Once completed, that will settle the issue. Let me address the use of Tea Tree Oil. Once again, at higher concentrations, this can be an irritant. However, our canisters have one (1) oz. of pharmaceutical grade Melaleuca oil and 11 oz. of water and an emulsifying agent that creates a gel. This combination is engineered to dissipate evenly over a 6 month period. We have had people with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) indicate that they do not like the smell, bit no one has ever indicated that it irritated them. When a guest does not like the smell, we instruct the engineering staff to simply remove it for the guest, then replace it when the guest checks out. Mr. Grimes also mentioned reaching out to the AAAAI. This is excellent. Dr. Condemi, a world renowned allergist, sits on the board of AAAAI. He has reviewed independent testing of the PURE Program and has written a letter of endorsement. This can be found on our web site. We are excited when experts raise awareness and ask questions. It allows us the opportunity to explain how our process works and its effectiveness. We take our work very seriously. PURE has undergone several independent tests and consistently shows our program as a highly effective and safe means to create a more comfortable environment in a guest room. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. Rest assured that we will look into this and we do not have any properties in California with the allergy friendly rooms. We have about a dozen Wyndham hotels with the designation. I have copied Brault, president of Pure Solutions NA who we partnered with on the ClearAir rooms by Pure, for his information and for further comment on the process are rooms undergo. Thanks. At our last meeting we discussed the need to eliminate/control ozone because it is a well known asthma trigger with the potential to cause respiratory damage. I have sent a similar request to the Indoor Air Quality Association (www.iaqa.org) and the Indoor Environmental Standards Organization (www.indoorstandards.org), an ANSI accredited developer of standards. Tea tree oil is a respiratory irritant to many and there is much concern about the potential for constant use of anti-microbials creating resistant organisms. I hope Wyndham isn't using these in California hotels without certification by the California Environmental Protection Agency Air Resources Board - which requires certification of all air purifying devices. According to their Web site the law became effective last October 18 and the devices used by Wyndham are not listed as certified. See: http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/indoor/aircleaners/aircleaners.ht m Not only is there much mis-information but Wyndham may be placing themselves at risk. Carl Grimes Healthy Habitats LLC ----- Thank you . I would be most pleased to give Wyndham appropriate information on this subject. Jack D. Thrasher, Ph.D. Wyndham ClearAir Rooms I read about the Wyndham ClearAir Rooms. It's good to see that Wyndham is interested in making their hotels safer and improving air quality for your guests and employees.Unfortunately, someone has lead you astray. There is a lot of incorrect information and deceit in regard to the topic of the health effects of mold and other indoor air quality issues. I encourage you to contact some of the legitimate experts in this field. They will be able to give you accurate information and advise you about the correct procedures for improving indoor air quality. As a starting place, here are 3 names. They can direct you to additional experts as needed.
