My husband was very sick in January. He has since made a complete recovery

but now he has to use a walker where before he could use a cane. He is a

lot weaker. He was given metronidazole [flagyl] for a C-Diff infection in

the hospital. I think that explains his weakness. When the C-Diff recurred

I had to pay for Vancomycin because the insurance company wanted him to

take Flagyl. I am going to appeal, but be sure you don't take this drug.

To Elinor,

Two tears ago I had colon & bladder surgery and ended up with C-Diff. After two

rounds of Flagyl I had lost a lot of weight, was extremely week and still had

the C-Diff so a friend who is a nurse practioner told me to insist on a

Vancomycin prescription. and fortunately my insurance paid some of the bill. It

was the most expensive drug I ever took in all my 75 years but it made all the

difference. I would never take Flagyl again. I do think it only made me sicker.

I think the insurance companies insist on Flagyl because it is less expensive.

I use a cane and a rollerator and have a stair lift in my home, however I have

to manage two steps up to a landing to get on it....and I have 5 steps to manage

to leave the house. If my late onset (age 65) CMT progresses as fast in the

next 5 years as it did in the last 5 then I will have will have to make other

arrangements.

Metronidazole (Flagyl) has been on the CMT Medications Alert List for quite some

time, listed as 'moderate to significant risk' for people with CMT. You will

also find a B6 link there for daily amount.

http://cmtausa.org/med_alert.php

The Letter to the Medical Professional and the Medication Alert List can be

downloaded here for free at

https://secure.charcot-marie-tooth.org/publications.php

It's a good idea to have several copies of this list, for all the doctors you

see, copies for your family health records too.
