Guest guest
Never had loud noises or high pitched noises bother or hurt my ears. I can drive down a freeway with a car full of screaming kids and the noise wouldn't bother me. I also used to fall asleep at WWF wrestling matches. My son and ex loved wrestling and I was tired. Guest guest
I have never liked sharp loud noises either. In all my years in concert bands I've never been able to sit in front of the percussion section, and could never understand how the clarinets could stand being in front of the trumpets. I thought I had sensative hearing because I could hear high pitched whines that no one else would, which I incorrectly identified as being in the atmosphere. Now I think they're my own private noises, courtesy of CMT and Menieres. It seems the whines are loudest on the days when the nerve pain is the worst, so I assume they're related. I tried talking to the last neurologist I saw about it, but he'd already given me the 'yep you've got it, nothing we can do about it' blow off and he didn't care to continue to discuss symptoms with me anymore. Guest guest
JoAnn, I found over 700 posts about hearing in our Archives. CMT is both a 'motor' and 'sensory' syndrome, so it seems that our hearing * sensations * can be affected at times. (Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy - HMSN.) Guest guest
My CMT daughter has very sensitive ears. I never thought that CMT could have anything to do with it.
Guest guest
Thanks, Gretchen, I guess I was using the wrong words when I was searching. Guest guest
Along with my CMT blessing, I have been blessed with Meniere's for more that 20 years. I wear bilateral BTE(Behind The Ear) hearing aids and they do what they promise -- they aid my hearing. Unlike eyeglasses that correct vision, hearing aids help you to know someone said something, but not necessarily exactly what they said. Even with aids, my most used word is " What? " That being said they are great help to me. If you you get aids, don't go in with inflated expectations, but accept what the aids give you. My hearing loss interferes with my learning of Italian. The speech is very fast with lots of vowels, all difficult to decode. A counter-intuitive fact is that when one is hard of hearing, loud noises are very painful. The HoH person is always straining to hear soft sounds, and when a very loud sound occurs it is more painful for the HoH that a normal hearing person. The worst sound for be is a crying baby. My defense is to turn off my aids. Loud volume on a television often can be helped by adjusting the treble and bass controls to augment the sound in range where amplification is needed. If a graphic equalizer is available in your system more control of amplification in specific ranges. I pipe the sound from my TV through a Bose Wave Radio which helps quite a bit. Commercials broadcast sound at a much higher level than entertainment broadcasts so keep the volume control handy to lower the audio. Being a curmudgeon I just mute them. Guest guest
I don't have a problem with my hearing but the constant scaling and itching of the ears and I get ear infections very easy had one so bad a couple years ago I got cellulitis on my face and spent 5 days in hospital and I talk with the only person I know who has CMT personally and she has same problem with itching and scaling of the ears. Now is that a symptom because this all started`the same time my feet started bothering me. If so please let me know thank you this site is god send. When Gretchen mentioned noise bothering her, I searched for noise and hearing in the posts and files, but didn't find anything. For me, my husband puts up the TV sound really loud and it " hurts " my ears. I also was diagnosed with Meniere's Syndrome many years ago. I get an incidence of this once in a while. It seems to happen if I'm eating particularly " bad " foods. It's hard to pin down. Anyone else having these problems? Thx! JoAnn
