Peripheral Nervous System - Defined

Hi Larry,

With all due respect to you and much appreciation for your wonderful sense of

humor, I think we are likely talking about the same thing…with a slight

discrepancy in the labeling of ‘the parts’.

By definition, the central nervous system (CNS) refers to the brain and spinal

cord only.

http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/nsdivide.html

The cranial nerves and spinal nerves branch out from the central nervous system

at nerve roots and then extend into the rest of the body.  These cranial and

spinal nerves are our peripheral nervous system, which connect our body with

our central nervous system (brain/spinal cord).

CRANIAL NERVES

The cranial nerves extend out from the brainstem (or nose/eyes) to the head/neck

region.

According to research biologist, Schutzer:

-          -     There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves, which are

part of the peripheral nervous system.

-          -     Ten pairs of the cranial nerves arise from the

brain stem, while the other two pairs (I and II) arise from the nose and eyes.

-          -     Nerves I and II are sensory only while III - XII

are mixed (sensory and motor).

SPINAL NERVES

The spinal nerves extend out from the spinal cord to the rest of the body.  In

other words, that nerve in your toe is a “spinal nerveâ€.

For an excellent explanation of how the spinal nerves connect to the spinal cord

and branch out to the rest of the body, see…

CMT affects the peripheral nervous system, i.e. the spinal and cranial nerves.

It used to be believed that the cranial nerves were spared, but researchers

discovered that this isn’t true.

Marie-Tooth_disease

Not everyone is symptomatic, of course, and different types of CMT are more

likely to produce symptoms, but it is definitely possible for cranial nerves to

be impacted.

The fact that hearing may be affected by CMT is well-documented:

I‘m not a doctor and I certainly do not intend any disrespect to anyone's

knowledge.  Just want to clarify what we are talking about.  If I’ve

misrepresented anything here, please post the references, so I can get

clarification myself.
