Subject: [] new windows for MCS people

Hi everyone,

It has been a while since I have posted anything. I have MCS and we live in a

house that is about 50 years old. When we bought it 5 years ago we did a lot of

renovation but we are far from done. Half of our house has new windows and the

other half does not. Our old windows need to be replaced since they are starting

to break. The ones we already have in the other part of the house are vinyl.

When they did all the renovation I got pretty sick and had to live outside the

house for close to 4 years. From then on we have been a lot more careful since

we learned so much. I would like to know if there are any good windows out there

for people like me? Windows that would not gas off? I do have problems with

vinyl floors and we only use linoleum for that reason. I thought of maybe buying

them this year and letting them air out till next year but I do not know if

these old windows will last that long. Any ideas?

Thanks

cathy

Hi ,

When you had your new windows installed, did your other renovations trigger

your problems, or are you sure it was the windows? Vinyl itself should not

trigger any problems, as it is a high molecular weight non-volatile polymer,

polyvinylchloride, PVC. Floors can be covered with vinyl, but that is a

plasticized vinyl. Different manufacturers use different plasticizers. So, it is

quite possible that some vinyl floors can cause severe adverse reactions, while

others cause little or no reaction. Some use tri-aryl phosphate plasticizers,

which are known to off gas trace phenolic compounds, which can be quite

irritating to some people. The purpose of the plasticizer is to soften the

vinyl, increase its flexibility. Windows are made with rigid PVC, which contains

none of these softeners.

Remember, wood windows need periodic new paint or varnish, a potential future

problem, while vinyl windows need only occasional cleaning.
