Guest guest
Felicia - I was doing a search on Flagyl (metronidazole) to get info to present to my dr about my concerns. One of the serious cautions is : <can cause a peripheral neuropathy with sensory disturbances e.g. at the hands and feet. Neuropathy is often only slowly reversible or not reversible at all > Someone at a MGH website wrote in: <<one possible side effect to be concerned about is the potential for exaserbation of underlying peripheral neuropathy in patients that may have any form of neuropathy or may have risk factors for neuropathy such as family history of carpel tunnel or high arches in the feet. Dear Lord, Metrogel is one of them. I am the kind of person that saves WAY too much stuff. I have all these tubes of things I was prescribed, but never got around to throw away. One is Metrogel. If my foggy memory serves me right, this was given to me in 1997 (maybe this is one time being a clutterbug is good). Either right before or right after my hysterectomy.... and that's when my symptoms started (the RA, or FMS, or whatever I have). Now I'm REALLY upset, wondering if this drug is the cause of my problems. Do you (or anyone else) know how I can research this, or if you know of anyone who has long term damage due to this drug? Guest guest
Flagyl can damage the 8th cranial nerve. If you are on flagyl and have any changes in your hearing, you need to stop.

Guest guest
Yes, Jan, you're right. My dr had prescribed Flagyl, and I was told on this list that it is very toxic. I went to the website of the manufacturer to read the 'handout' (forget the name of the manufacturer, but a search should locate it), and I found out it should not be given to anyone with neuropathy & can cause permanent damage. Since I have not had any decent med care, and since I have needles and pins pain, I didn't want to chance permanent damage. There is a very clear warning in the beginning of the pkg insert, but I cannot remember what it was! Here is something that I saved on Flagyl: http://www.infomed.ch/100drugs/menzadre.html Metronidazole: Adverse Reactions High doses or long-term administration of metronidazole can cause a peripheral neuropathy with sensory disturbances e.g. at the hands and feet. Neuropathy is often only slowly reversible or not reversible at all. Neutropenia can also develop. Metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, upper abdominal pain, or headaches sometimes occur following usual therapeutic doses. Convulsions, ataxia, skin problems (skin rashes, urticaria), and vaginal candidiasis are not as common. Isolated cases of pancreatitis, cystitis, mucous colitis, and hemolysis have been observed. Mutagenic effects have been observed in animal experiments; no carcinogenic effect has yet been demonstrated in man. and: one possible side effect to be concerned about is the potential for exaserbation of underlying peripheral neuropathy in patients that may have any form of neuropathy or may have risk factors for neuropathy such as family history of carpel tunnel or high arches in the feet. In the case of underlying neuopathy Flagyl (a Known neuro-toxin)can cause the exaserbation and progression of underlying neuropathy even after the cesation of administering of the drug. in general the affected areas are the peripheral nerves (feet and hands). this is punctuated by increasing numbness and marked pain sensitivity. >From: Jan Gunter <janwg@...> >rheumatic >Subject: rheumatic Flagyl >Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 05:26:34 -0600 > >It seems like I recall that there was quite a discussion about Flagyl a >while back. Guest guest
Dear Lindy, You said, " Sorry I just realised Flagyl is an anti bacterial, I thought it was an anti fungal. I just read it can actually make yeast problems worse. " That's interesting, because I was almost sure my daughter's doctor has her on it as an anti-fungal. Guest guest
Hi , I started Flagyl almost 3 weeks ago. My doctor wanted me to take 1500 mg per day for 10 days! I had so many side effects from it (metallic taste, sick to my stomach, loss of appetite, extreme nausea, dizziness & light-headed) that I could only take 750 mg per day at the absolute max! Even at that, I barely got through the 10 days. However, my joint pain reduced even further (I am taking Minocin 200 mg/day & Nystatin powder tid... I took Diflucan for 21 days earlier). He felt that since it was having a positive effect, could I stand taking 500 mg per day for about another month. It turns out that if I take the 500 mg at once just before I go to bed, I have the side effects while I sleep and hardly notice them. (Other than it makes me sleep like a log!)I was either herxing at first or my body has finally adjusted to the drug, because I can tolerate that dose quite easily now. (after 2 weeks of hell!) So, maybe you need to take your dosage more slowly and build up gradually, letting your body tolerate the medication. My doctor also put me on liver support as Flagyl can be hard on your liver. (Milk thistle, alpha lipoic acid, N acetyl cysteine, zinc citrate, d-glucarate, MSM) It's supposed to help dampen down the side effects too. My joint symptoms are pretty minimal now... I only need to take one Vioxx every 4 days, just to keep the inflammation down to a low 'roar'. Good luck! Guest guest
I took the Minocin/Nizoral combo until the last month when Sentef decided to put a few patients for the first time on the Flagyl and I went on it for 30 days. . In all honesty, I think I would have done well without the Flagyl and still gone into remission. If you have concerns about the flagyl, I would certainly give just the Minocin/Nizoral combo a try and see if you get into remission on it. I feel certain that I would have still reached remission ....maybe it might have taken a bit longer...but remission just the same without the flagyl. Again we are all different Go with your gut feelings. You can always add the flagyl later if the two dont seem to work. Just my 2 cents. Guest guest
Hi Diane, I started it 500 mg mwf and then was able to go up from there. Yes it was a herxbut I just endured it as it was not disabling. I was already on minocin 7 yrs. He prescrin\beds usually 500 a day every day for his protocol and some take 100 a day as he did( dr Sentef) Love Marge > From what I understand the flagyl has to be started VERY slowly and you have to work up to 250 mg. It is similar to the other antibiotics, and you will herx if started at too high a dosage. A well known lyme doc says some can only start out w/ a sliver of a tab and then work up. Hope that helps. > Diane

Just started on it, so don't know yet how well it works. The Probiotics definitely help and need to be taken while on Antibiotics because long term antibiotic use will cause yeast problems. Mine got really bad when I was on daily antibiotics, but cutting back to MWF and taking the acidophilus have improved things quite a bit. Not completely though so I'm trying the additional things. Guest guest
You might want to include " Para-Cleanse " (Nature's Sunshine) as it has everything you mention, and then some . I use it every other month for 10 days, and have seen wonderful results. Not 100% yet, but have seen an improvement. I also decided to try Flagy (200mg) twice a day, and have see an improvement. No more monthly IV's, or any other drugs. Guest guest
Although it wasn't with Flagyl, my son had this when we would start something that helped with constipation a little too well. It seemed much worse before the encopresis remedy because the colon was too stretched and he didn't have good feeling or muscle control in that area. After the treatment when the muscles/nerves had returned to a where they should have been, this didn't happen any more. .
Guest guest
Thank You, if the effect is temporary, limited to the treatment medication), then we can handle it. I'm so hopeful and nervous. My son won't shut up. Not stimming, not echolalia, but so imaginative and so communicative, so interactive with his environment. (almost but not quite like that breakthrough we had last year while on the augmenten, although that was very dramatic it lasted only a couple of days, and then he regressed). While the pronunciation needs some work, he is much more readily understood nowadays. I've gotten in the habit, if he has repeated himself to someone several times, of echoing what he said, and more often than not lately people will say to me, " oh, I heard him " . The defiance, the lying, the manipulation, the comprehension, it's amazing. Of course getting him to stay focused on task, like cleaning things up, etc. is a nightmare. Even when it comes to activities he enjoys like arts and crafts time, it's a struggle to complete anything. Plus he is becoming more meticulous with his paper work, and he can see somewhat now of black and white. We have a computer game, and it allows you to print the screen, so ph was playing a letters game, the letters are hidden in the picture and you have to find them, well ph printed it out in black and white and came to me, pointed out an N, K, O and one other letter I can't recall. I was stunned. My husband pointed out that on the computer it's all in color so of course he can see it, and probably memorized where things were, but still, it took some ability to find it on the black and white page. It's like me, I can never figure out what those fuzzy pictures in the mall are, until someone tells me, and then I can " see " the picture hidden within. Lots of prayers, but I'm hopeful. It was prescribed to my son many years ago for parasites (apparently this stuff is so chemical, it kills everything) and poor kid felt so bad... I couldn't give more than two doses. Also, I read about some studies where Flagyl caused cancer in animals. Valentina

Guest guest
My husband has a recurring C-Diff infection. The doctor wants too treat it with Flagyl this time. It's on the CMT no no list. The doctor says his nerves are already gone so why not? It certainly would be easier than Vancomycin which Medco won't pay for as an out patient. Is the list absolute? What are the risks and percentages?
