I know muscle weakness is a problem with HyperT, but is muscle cramping in

the legs and feet, particularly while at rest, a symptom of becoming HypoT?

I've been drinking lots of orange and pink grapefruit juice recently, as well

as taking my multi-vitamin, so I assumed my potassium level was okay.

However, when I looked at the label on the vitamin/mineral supplement, I

realize I'm only getting 2% of the daily recommended allowance. I don't

really like bananas. Can anyone give me some more dietary boosters so I

don't have to take another pill? I KNOW 's site is a great site for

locating this information, but I have a problem navigating it. Does anyone

have an " iThyroid.com for dummies " manual? Perhaps there is another

vitamin/mineral lacking in my diet which is causing the cramping. I DON'T

experience this after walking, so I don't think it's an issue of hydration.

Thanks!

Bonner, I have been having leg cramps in my calf while laying down. I was

just flipped to Hypo by the Tapazole..let me know if you find out anything

about what the cause is :)) thanks Kim

Muscle cramping is from lack of calcium and magnesium... so if you find the

foods that are associated with these vitamins, you could supplement with them

instead of a pill...

Hi Bonner,

I've had lots of problems with muscle cramps in the past - when i was hyper

my legs would cramp in the middle of the night and i would have to stand up

and stretch to relieve the cramp. Since being stabilised, it's only been an

occassional occurrence - but it really bothered me when doing yoga, so i

started on a magnesium tablet (one 500mg tab taken 4 or 5 nights a week) and

this has really helped me. Plus I'm finally building up some muscle tone -

it's great to have some strength after all these years. I don't bother

about a calcium supp, because i love dairy - milk, cheese, sour cream... the

list goes on and on!

Thanks, Chris. My multi-vitamin gives me 20% of the calcium daily

requirement and I take 2 " Oscal 500+D " tablets a day, so I'm getting 120% of

my calcium, via pills. I get additional calcium through dairy products. I

don't really care for milk, but do like low-fat yogurt. I love cheese, but

I try to limit it because of the fat and calories. I need to boost my

magnesium, as I'm only getting 25% of the recommended daily amount through

the multi-vitamin. It also provides 100% of the recommendation for copper,

but I think I should supplement that as well. I'll check Ithyroid.com to

get suggestions on magnesium-rich foods and adding copper to my diet.

Just a little note on the calcium as I've noticed many other items that are

higher in calcium then what milk provides and if you don't like it this will

be even better.

Dried Wheat grass or barley grass 514 mg of calcium, we have these great

juice bar places that put wheat grass or barley grass in there juices

Also, sardines 443, Almonds 233, hazelnuts 209, parsley 203, turnip greens

191, brazil nuts 186, sunflower seeds 174 (great on salads), watercress 151,

garbanzo beans 150, black beans 135, pistashios 135, pinto beans 135, kale

134, spirulina 131 (I get this in a vitamin supplement), yogurt 121, and

milk is only 119 after this theres collard greens, sesame seeds, tofu,

walnuts, okra, salmon, cottage cheese, eggs, brown rice, bluefish, halibut,

chicken, ground beef and mackerel. The weird sea vegetables available in

whole-food stores provide 1,400 mg of calcium.

Kim, be VERY careful about jumping out of bed to stretch the muscles in your

calves and legs. My brother had a really bad lower leg cramp in the middle

of the night and stood up, trying to reduce it. He ended up with a torn

Achilles' tendon and had to have surgery to re-attach it. My leg cramps are

painful, but I try to massage them and just flex my toes a bit, rather than

exerting real opposing pressure. Even in a sleep-induced trance, I'm

reminded of the excruitating pain Rick endured from the torn tendon and the

discomfort from the ensuing surgery and recovery. He was on crutches for at

least 6 weeks. He had to keep his foot elevated at all times he wasn't

moving from one place to another, AND his movement was restricted to

essential movements; i.e. to the bathroom, or from the bed to a chair in his

bedroom.

Debby,

I've had a lot of muscle cramps. Though it was due to low potassium but when

that was checked all was OK. My Hepatologist said to drink a large glass of

tonic water. I've done this and it helps a lot. The quinine in it is

suppose to be what works and it seems to. Try this. It worked for me.

As a first step, why not try to increase the potassium in your diet? Bananas, for example, are potassium-rich.

I was at the movies last night, first time in about a year, not beacse of any reasson except it is easier to crash on the couch...

Anyway, I had such a bad foot cramp I had to leave my seat & go to the back of the theatre & walk around for 15 min. (Icould still see the movie) When I returned my husband couldn't believe it was that bad!

nne, that is so much like what I have experienced. I truly thought it was from lact of potassium, but now I see from posts that it could be from the medicine. I will ask the doctor AGAIN and see if she says that she has never had anyone complain of this again! But, then, if she has not had many AIH patients, she would not actually have run across it.

Thanks .....debby

Well..here is my 2 cents worth..lol.. I had some very mild musclecramps when I first started pred, but werent bad and eased up...when6mp was added to the mix, however, the cramps, and spasms were reallyawful the first few months. Middle of the night foot and calf crampswould have me up at all hours;and the joints in my hands would lock upwithout warning or start spazzing...(the worst was trying to help sonwith orthodontic rubber bands and hand would cramp...poor kid keptgetting pinged by the bands)It eventually got better, and became onlyoccasional. Now that my pred has gone back up, I have been experiencing a returnof the cramps and spasms. The middle of the nite stuff is the worst. The other is minimal, usually only a problem after a lot ofkeyboarding or if I have been doing some kind of repetive thing withthe hands. Interesting...you mean the tonic water people use to mix alcoholic drinks? If so, I am game to try anything. I drink tons of water anyway, but maytbe I should take some potassium tabs that I have here too. debby

THat is what I have to deal with! I get them under my breast occasionally on the right side. The muscle cramps just keep on going until ev;entually they stop. Often I have to just twist into different positition to try to stretch until the cramps go away! I hate them! Then, when they hit my shoulder and my shoulder turns inward and my hand turns backward! WHOA....could enter the horror pictures!

When I was in the hospital and had bad muscle cramps & twinges, after all kinds of meds, one of the Doc's put me on quinine. It worked really well. This is the same doc who calls my mineral water 'miracle water' I drink 2-3 liters a day and never have the low magnesium problems that others do who taks prograf. The quinine is another drug that sits in my pharmacy. It is in pill (prescription) form.

I might have to give that a try...I always liked to drink tonic water

in the summer...but havent in some time. Muscle cramps are making me

nuts right now!

-One word of caution about tonic water....use in moderation. I

learned from uncomfortable experience that too much can cause itching

....and I KNOW everyone here really loves that feeling!

I get those spasms too. Good thing I don't have a girlfriend right

now, I'd either kick or slap her out of bed in my sleep, lol. I

would get a kick out of seeing myself sleep, I think it would be

hysterical tosing turning etc... Wish I knew why too. I guess it is

the nerve entrapment or damage to the nerve.

Hi Bee:

Please feel free to post my message in your success folder. I hope

to eventually have a report of complete healing at some point in the

near future, but I realize that it takes some time to mop up the

last of the candida and also complete the healing process. I've

only been treating candida for just over a year with just 1 month on

your program. As I am 45 and have had a poor diet most of my life,

I expect complete recovery to take another year or two anyway. I

believe it is very unfortunate that people are told by some

naturopaths, etc., that candida can be cured in only 2 months

because that causes them to give up. I also believe that anyone who

has external signs of fungus of any type probably has too much on

their insides as well and is sick in more ways than they realize

because of it. I suppose you know this, but most people don't.

This has been a most amazing journey for me...

Thanks,

Jan

Dor the last few weeks people have been offering suggestions on restless leg

syndrome, and successful medication for them. I am not sure what the diference

IS between muscle cramps and restless leg syndrome, but it would probly help

you if you read the archives ( or even the " messages in this topic " at the end

of the email ) and took all the names of the meds to your doctor. and have a

serious discussion.

I too had " Charley horse " type muscle cramps regularly when I was on HTCZ

diuretic, and my potasium levels were compromised. A good dose of additional

potasium usually helped. Now I am spirolectone(?) and I do not seem to be

bothered so much but even now, sometimes, I have a beginning of the cramp, and I

have to move it and excersize it. I have to see what my potasium levels are

now, with the next blood test. And talk to the doctor. Clara from OR

I already take Neurontin at 1200 mg. These things are simply killers. I can do

pretty good until I am waken by them in the middle of the night. I can handle

the ones in the legs and calves, but the ones on the inside of my thigh, those

are the ones that do me in. When I finally make it out of bed, a sort of hobble

around and walk them off......I don't know what else to do.

I too have those muscle cramps, like a charle horse,in my legs, feet &

hands

I was given Neurotin - 400 mg (4 times a day ).
