Guest guest
There is obviously something wrong with these cramps, but I will wait until I see the GI in October....thank you for your hlep and suggestions. Hopefully they will subside! Guest guest
Hi I am trying to get caught up here so forgive me if I repeat someone else. Have you had your potassium checked? Did you try increasing your dairy and or water intake? At this time of year it is very easy for these things to get out of whack. Some times salt intake needs to be increased. These are all things you can try. If the cramps are severe you should call your doctor. He may want to do some tests to check your electrolytes. Just my opinion,
Guest guest
Thanks for your note. I have not had any tests done for the past month and they didn't check the potassium...just LFT's and CBC. The albumin was rather elevated, but the Rheumatologist didn't call me back, so guess it is OK. I have been drinking lots of water, and that seems to be helping somewhat. On the other hand, the cramps get very bad when I exercise, so it could be a lack of hydration...and where we live, it gets plenty hot!!! On Friday, my hubby is having a colonoscopy so will talk with the GI then. We have the same GI. The thing that is getting me right now, is that every day, I break out in hives...different places on my body...the strangest thing. I am trying to figure out what I am eating, touching, etc., that I have not done before....I need to get to the doctor...but too stubborn to go! Guest guest
Have you been really nervous lately? I know when I get upset or real nervous I break out in hives. Of course I also break out when I eat to many acidy things like tomatoes, oranges etc. On the other hand have you been checked for lupus? One of my father in laws first symptoms was hives. Good luck to your husband hope things go well. Let me know.

Guest guest
Serena, There can be several reasons for leg cramps. I don't associate them with a herx, but perhaps others have different experiences. I would make sure to drink enough water and make sure you are getting enough calcium and magnesium. Try some extra to see if that brings relief. Are you doing some gentle exercises? Even when we are in pain it is helpful to do gentle stretching and range of motion exercises to keep from " freezing up " . For the sole of the foot problem you could try a massage by rolling your foot over a tennis or even golf ball. You can sit down while you do it and that way have better control how much pressure to apply. There is a little trick that works surprisingly well for my yoga students should they experience a leg cramp. Press with the side of the index finger on the upper lip, right under the nose. It sounds weird, but there is apparently a pressure point. It won't hurt to give it a try. I hope this helps, Ute

Guest guest
Serena.... I have a lot of muscle cramps in my legs and toes when I forget to take my calcium and potassium vitamins for awhile. It seems to definitely have something to do with their levels in my blood. Someone told me about the calcium connection and I ignored it until my legs got so bad I was hopping around the bed almost every night with cramps. I was always pretty good about taking my multivitamin with potassium. A couple of rolaids or tums turned off the cramps completely. Go figure!!!! Guest guest
On this topic of muscle cramps, I have a question.  I frequently get muscle cramps, which I believe are considered common for CMT, in the fingers, toes, feet, and calves. And, I also get them in other places. For example, I wake up once or twice a night with a cramp in my thigh that locks my knee in place. I have to use my hand to push my knee forward and stop the cramp.  Occasionally, I also get them in my abdomen (I assume it's my diaphragm) and my shoulder blade/upper arm area.  Do any of you get cramps in unusual places like this? Is it accurate to say that the cramps in the lower limb areas are common with CMT but the upper limb/core cramps are not common? Or does everyone get them in all these places? And does the answer vary based on type of CMT?  Thank you,  (CMT1A)
Guest guest
I also get them in my thighs and have gotten them in the ab area. I saw the surgeon yesterday for the permanent stimulator and I will have the surgery within the next 2-3 weeks. I will have to be off for 2 weeks because of my job which requires alot of movement. Guest guest
Hi , I get can cramping everywhere, including my diagphragm. I hate the diaphragm ones! Since taking magnesium I find that my cramping is no longer " action stopping " but is more like " muscle tightening " . For example, when I stretch out my quads after cycling I used to get hamstring cramps. Now I get a " tight " feeling which vanishes once I put my leg straight. I no longer get calf cramps that wake me up in the middle of the night, but I do get " tightness " occasionally. I find that my cramping is worse when I am overtired (jetlagged especially), eating poorly, after alcohol, or when I forget to take magnesium. I hope this makes sense. Guest guest
Hi Donna,  Thank you for your response. I was taking Magnesium for a few months and didn't notice any difference myself. I also regularly enjoy balsamic vinegar (as Steve suggested) and it doesn't seem to make a difference either.  They do seem to be worse when I try something new (like Ed mentioned). For example, if I tried a new pair of shoes, I'd get foot/toe/calf cramps.  The everyday cramps in my thigh and back just simply seem to be related to nerve degeneration, since these areas are exactly the areas where I have the highest level of pain.  From: ddh49 <ddh49@...> Subject: Re: Muscle cramps Date: Friday, October 2, 2009, 5:52 AM  Hi , I get can cramping everywhere, including my diagphragm. Guest guest
> > Hi Bee, > Can a lot of emotional stress cause your body to need more magnesium? I have recently started having charlie horse cramps in my calves again. Nothing has changed with my supplements. I am currently taking the Now magnesium citrate tabs, 200 mg. I take 1 1/2 tabs in am and 1 tab in evening. +++Hi Leesa, You are only taking 500 mg of magnesium per day, and you need 600 mg total of magnesium and calcium citrate, taken in divided doses and together with meals. First, take the correct amounts and see if you have cramps after 3 days. Also ensure you aren't having a lot of tea or anything that is diuretic, which makes your body lose water along with minerals, i.e. lots of baking soda, lots of greens or green leafy vegetables, caffeine, etc. If you are having any dairy products other than butter it will also cause calcium to magnesium imbalances. Are you having a lot of bone broth or sardines? Bee
