Guest guest
It is interesting how " science papers " such as this always seem to be promoted as " newswise " . I have seen it written several times now that people of African decent and Hispanic decent are more likely to have asthma. I question the validity of this concept as I am not aware that people in the Carribean, Mexico, Spain, South America, Africa, etc. are known to have asthma at rates as high as the US, yet these countries have greater populations that are of African or Spanish ancestry. So the question would be, do blacks and Hispanics in the US have a high rate of asthma than other blacks and hispanics living in other countries and if so, what would cause them to differ from people of similar ancestry living in other countries? Seems to me that it would be the standard of living, economics, diet and living environment that would cause a difference in susceptibility among people of similar ancestries. In other words, I think there is a possibility that not only is this paper discriminatory against mothers of sick children living in less than desirable environments, it is ethnically descrimanatory with a bias against the poor, too. Where did they find these depressed mothers whose children have high rates of asthma because of their mothers' mental problems? In the 9th Ward of New Orleans? I picture some big old fat guy in his early 60's cranking out this garbage to help sell more pharmaceuticals and then serving as an expert witness saying the mother is psycho...not the slumlord who left the building in disrepair and caused the children's asthma which caused the mother's depression along with her own exposure to the mess. For some reason, that seems more plausible to me. _http://www.blip.tv/file/2830582/_ (http://www.blip.tv/file/2830582/) Sharon I In a message dated 11/21/2009 6:08:58 P.M. Analyzing data from interviews with 262 mothers of African-American children with asthma — a population disproportionately affected by this inflammatory airway disorder — the Hopkins investigators found that children whose mothers had more depressive symptoms had more frequent asthma symptoms during the six-months of the study. Conversely, children whose mothers reported fewer depressive symptoms had less frequent asthma symptoms. Researchers tracked ups and downs in maternal depression as related to the frequency of asthma symptoms among children. “Even though our research was not set up to measure just how much a mom’s depression increased the frequency of her child’s [asthma] symptoms, a clear pattern emerged in which the latter followed the earlier,†says senior investigator Riekert, Ph.D., a pediatric psychologist and co-director of the s Hopkins Adherence Research Center. Guest guest
I agree. It is well known that many may live in places such as public housing infested with roaches, rats, mold and many other deplorable living conditions that can cause illness.   Intentionally ommiting these circumstances and seperating them from their ailments is like a slap in the face to them.     God Bless !! dragonflymcs Mayleen ________________________________ From: " snk1955@... Guest guest
This is probably a means to trying to medicate expectant mothers with anti-depressants, who may in reality be dealing with anything from natural hormonal changes, to problems environmental, medical and/or emotional that could be the root cause.
