I have pedal extension in my car and I love driving it. When I took my

driver's license I had hand controls and I agree with you: they were very

limiting. Pedal extensions are the best option.

I was just wondering one thing... I am a sixteen year old LP and am trying

to get my parents to look into a car and hand controls... They say that

before I get a car, I have to have hand controls. I was wondering what kind

of dwarfism the previous writers had who said that the Hand Controls were

limiting? Because the type of dwarfism I have gives me longer limbs, and a

shorter torso. Anybody know of anywhere I could find a local hand control

dealer? I live 1 hr. from Portland, OR. Thanks for all the info anybody can

give me! :-)

Dear Tim: I am an achon - 4' 1 " (I take every inch) - I have had both hand

controls and pedal extensions. The hand controls were limiting to me due to

rolling down the window when I was driving, going thru toll booths, getting

change for the toll booth. Having a short torso and longer limbs - you might

just need a cushion to sit on to give you height and the pedal extensions if

your legs cannot reach the pedals. When I first drove with pedal extensions

for me it was a very moving experience after having hand controls. When I

rent a car I have to use hand controls which I can still use - but pedal

extensions enable me to drive like your average person and keep my hand free

for putting on lipstick etc (just kidding) Please feel free to email me if

you want and I will explain in further detail or your parents - people that

have never used hand controls have no idea how limiting they are and pedal

extensions are easier to remove. And if your parents want to drive the car

with extensions as I tried to explain before they don't use the extensions

they use the standard pedals in the auto - putting their feet below the

extensions - it sounds more complicated but it's very easy according to my

parents and friends and valets - they just might have to push the seat back

(which they would have to do anyway!). The other person responded thinking

that they would push the seat all they way back and still use the extension

NO NO NO! Cyndi

Hi, Tim,

Hope you don't mind advice from an " old f***, " er, make that " old fool " <g>.

I'm almost proportional, slightly short-limb-long-trunk, and have been driving

thirty-eight years, since I was fifteen. My record isn't spotless, but my

insurance isn't in the state pool, either!

I personally don't need any adaptive devices, except a firm pillow. But I've

been married twice to achons who used extensions, so I can tell you, extensions

are better. Hand controls are great for those who have to use them, or rely on

other transportation. However, extensions allow you to control your vehicle

more in the way it was designed. Greater control (by YOU the driver) not only

means greater safety for you, the driver, and others on the roads, but also

means more self-assurance for YOU, which means even more safety.

For MOST LP's, I believe extensions should be the first choice in adaptations,

anything else (like hand-controls) a distant second.

Regards,

Jon

Oh, and one other thing! I have size 10 1/2 in men's size shoes... I tried

the pedal extensions and they seemed to be made for people with smaller shoe

sizes. And also, I was wondering what types of cars are the best for LPs? I

have been searching for the best type. I know one LP who drives a Geo Prizm,

and that seems to be a good car... Any suggestions would be muchly

appreciated!!! Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience in hand controls. I, myself

use foot pedal extensions. You might ask the dwarfismonelist for

their input...

Bonnie,

I know what you mean about ripping you off, I had a spinner knob

attached to my steering wheel. This item is something that you can purchase

at any auto parts store for around $5 to $6 and it takes 5 minutes to

install, if that. The place that we got my handcontrols put the spinner knob

on, installation cost $100 and the knob itself was $50, rounding my $1,000

limit that Ford offers for any adaptive devices. My handcontrols ran $850

total, $500 for the controls, $350 for installation. A friend of mine who

runs a non-profit operation states that handcontrols take an hour to

install, and probably cost for materials about $140. So your statement about

them ripping the disabled off is a truthful statement. By the way, check

your states Technical Alliance Program, they should have a website for the

ADA requirements like Handcontrols. Here in Washington State we have WATA,

or Washington Association for Technical Alliance. But the Technical Alliance

has usually a page that has used items for sale, trade or donation, so check

it out, your states website may have that feature.

Well I still work but have alot of numbness especially in my right leg and foot.

I just bought a new car but didn't ask what it would cost to get hand controls

at some point. I did already have one wreck from not feeling the brake. I am so

beat down from working two jobs I just don't know how much more I can do!
