Thats correct , Lesley worked WITH the state board to tailored its expressive therapy program (equally with its traditional Counseling and Psych program) to fit the state's requirements for an LMHC. What they did in their insight and brilliance, and where the NT CAT failed imho, is they collaborated with the state rulemakers (not struck out on their own) so the degree and professionals fit the requirements. The end result and product fit the bill so to speak. This not only HELPED with hireability, but it also took care of the insurance reimbursement bit. This allowed sites to actually hire Expressive Therapists and be able to do so because they would be legal and the sites insurance would cover the workers. It only makes sense that Expressive Therapists are reimbursed the

same way as Clinical Social Workers or other Mental Health Counselors. Sounds basically a good idea, but I am so confused why NY State would choose to put CAT's on their own like it is now. Insurance is archane and cumbersome enough to naturally resist change. I am curious how someone would figure insurance would make more space for another Clinician type rather than piggyback on previous efforts?? The professional identity will come later after you have an army of people out there doing it. It feels like this area is 8-10 years behind the curve in terms of acceptability and permeation of the Expressive Arts in clinical work. How did this happen? From: "NYCCAT "

The Eastern Region of the NADT presents:

The 2009 Eastern Regional Conference

Forward Momentum: Research, Licensure and Visibility

March 28, 2009~New York University

The growth of drama therapy is vital and necessary to our development

and professional standing in the mental health field. The 2009 Eastern

Regional Conference invites participants to contemplate and share on

areas that advance drama therapy forward into the future. Participants

are encouraged to share their own work in the areas of research,

licensure and public visibility, as well as new and innovative ways you

are expanding the boundaries of our profession.

Strong research is vital to our growth and inclusion in mental health

initiatives. Participants are invited to brainstorm, dialogue and

present on research that speaks to not only efficacy, but also embraces

methods that suit our field, clients, and goals. What is being done?

How are issues of methodology, control, spontaneity and artistry

combined? What are the pathsfor future research considerations? What of multi-disciplinary research methods?

The addition of the NY State LCAT license is a major achievement. What

can be learned from this? What credentialing issues are other states

and professionals facing? How do we begin to address the needs and

interests of the profession post licensure? What has yet to be done?

How has this affected the scope of practice? How can we address these

issues as a strong and unified professional group?

Lastly, participants are invited to explore increasing professional

visibility. Many of our clients struggle with issues of not fully being

seen. How are you visible at your own place of employment? How can we

present ourselves more visibly to the world? What place does marketing

have in our growth and advancement? How do we market ourselves and our

work, and show our value to the mental health field and beyond? How are

we harnessing the power of social networking and the internet/media?

If you are interested in presenting your work at this conference, please submit a proposal by January 10, 2009 to markbeauregard@ gmail.com .Please specify conference proposal in subject.

Proposal Guidelines:

Please submit the following information no later than January 10, 2009:

1. Title of presentation

2. Names of Presenters

3. A brief biography of each presenter (30 words or less)

4. An abstract of the presentation (50 words or less)

5. A brief description of the presentation

6. Length of presentation (1 ½ hours, or 3 hours)

I would recommend moving to the Boston area!

Having recently graduated from Lesley University (Cambridge MA) as an Expressive Therapist, and then moved to Westchester this summer I can safely say the Boston (and surrounding) areas have way way more opportunities than Westchester (but maybe not NYC). Perhaps it is the effect of having Lesley interns doing internships for the past 25+ years, but that area is plentiful with opportunity, acceptance and the evolution of thought that has come (and is needed!) with our field.

The Expressive Therapy program at Lesley is LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor) certified with the state. Many many positions available are looking for an LMHC trained clinician. Many positions are also not caught up in this NY Recreational Therapist game we have to contend with. Since the school has worked with the state insurance board, all LMHC's are on track to get licensure, practice creative arts, be able to bill insurance, etc. Its odd that it is only three hours away, but worlds apart in the evolution of our trade. Honestly, my first impression from moving to Westchester is how behind the curve the employers in this area are with the idea that Expressive Arts are a useful tool to have with their clients/patients. I am not even touching upon the rigors, resistance and seemingly negative relationship CAT's have with the NY State Board.

Dear All,

I hope this finds everyone well. I've really enjoyed the insight I've had into how licensing works there, thanks to all the contributions. I'm concerned though, as I intend to return to New York with the goal of trying to find work as a creative arts therapist. I had to return to Europe (I'm a US citizen) to complete my MA, as I couldn't afford the cost of private tuition in the US. I found it difficult to to find information regarding whether my MA would be recognised in the States. I felt that the majority of Creative Arts Therapists I spoke with agreed I could practice but would have to get certified in the state I lived in. I would prefer to return to New York where I have friends and family. I could also relocate to another part of the US if opportunities were more plentiful. I could also further my education here in Europe if it's necessary to secure work in the States. I understand the economic climate isn't good at the moment. I appreciate

the time you've taken to read this lengthy email and appreciate any advice offered.

To the Membership,

Last week I introduced myself as a new member of the NYCCAT Board and

indicated that I would bring before the board questions I have noted

on the list serve and indicate on the list serve the board's input.

Indeed these questions were addressed, and there was much to be said.

Currently I am drafting a comprehensive "report" of what was

discussed, and once completed and approved by the board members, I

will share it with the membership.Thank you for your patience.

Hope everyone had a safe and pleasant holiday weekend.
