Thanksgiving Eve 2008

Dear friends, colleagues and students of all vintages,

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone; we deserve some time to recuperate,

recharge and celebrate after all the excitement of this fall. The

next workshop of " Dance/Movement Therapy From the Inside Out " will

meet Sunday December 7th from 12 Noon-2PM at Dance Theater Workshop,

219 West 19th Street. 2009 monthly workshops will continue meeting

the first Sunday of each month from 12-2PM at DTW.

I look forward to seeing all of you who can be there on December 7th.

Please confirm in advance at or by email. As per usual,

we will meet at 11:50 AM on the main floor of DTW.

Warmly, and enjoy the holiday,

Johanna

Dance/Movement Therapy From the Inside Out

It is an apparent paradox of any form of therapy: the deeper we go

inside ourselves, the more equipped we are to attend outside, to deal

with all the realms of other people's process. Dance Movement Therapy

is an ideal vehicle to experience the way that we can dive

simultaneously inside and out. The DMT session crystallizes and makes

manifest what happens in any therapeutic interaction. In this

workshop, DMT will be the vehicle to explore how we use ourselves in

our work, and tend to ourselves in our lives.

In DMT we use ourselves as divining rods to receive the expression of

our clients—be they individuals or groups. The more internally aware

and sensitized we are to our own process, the more attuned we can be

to others' expression. In the DMT session we must be able to

simultaneously observe body, movement and interactional expression,

listen to verbal expression, and pick up kinesthetically and

vibrationally; then make sense of all these levels, and reflect back

empathically in the choreography of the moment. We must be

exquisitely attuned to ourselves to be able to direct our attention

outward and reliably process and organize all the information we are

receiving.

In this regular workshop we will work on honing our internal and

external perception. We will explore the non-duality of going inside

to attend outside, and how tending to ourselves and work with our own

process is a vehicle to meeting others empathically. We will work

with the notion that the realms of safety and compassion for clients

in the therapy session is a mirror of the realms that the therapist

has encountered in her/himself. In sum, we will investigate how

tending to ourselves is part and parcel of tending to our clients.

This workshop is suitable for clinicians and students in dance

movement therapy and related professions, as well as those working

with comparable realms in creative process and self exploration.

PARTICULAR EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON SELF-RENEWAL AND REPLENISHMENT

FOR ALL THOSE IN THE HELPING PROFESSIONS.

Johanna Climenko, ADTR, LCSW, LCAT, a pioneering D/MT since 1968, has

worked clinically with the range of populations served by D/MT and

taught and consulted extensively, in and out of academic settings, in

the U.S. and the Netherlands. Since 1986 she has added Reichian

therapy to her private practice work, developing the combined

modality of D/MT and Reichian therapy. Currently her focus is on the

complementarity of D/MT, Laban Movement Analysis and Reichian Therapy

in private practice and in training and consulting other mental

health professionals. Self-care for the therapist is a major theme in

much of her teaching.
