Guest guest
Huffington Post piece about Palin and son Trig. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/29/trig-paxson-van-palin-sar_n_122474.html Just to add something here. I don't think that Ms. Palin at this point should be viewed as a viable disability advocate at this point. She's only been a parent for four months and though her decision to keep her child, when 90% of others who are informed their child has Down Syndrome terminate their pregnancy, is admirable I think we should look at her record as an administrator closely. Did she as mayor or governor support initiatives and provide appropriations to support individuals living with disabilities? Are individuals living self-determined lives in Alaska and are they being provided access to quality educations? Additionally what has she done to provide families an easier path to health care and have her efforts as an elected official been such that she will be supportive of spending on appropriate programming to enhance the lives of individuals, at least 20% of the US population, who have a disability? That is where I think we should be looking. Not the fact that she has a four month old with Down Syndrome. That I think can be a double edged sword down the road. But hopefully she will have a different perspective over time. Amazing things happen when you live with something 24/7. Carolyn
Guest guest
Great point! Lord knows even if we had a candidate with a kiddo with ASD we may not agree...
