Guest guest
Lujene, I like your post too. However, I remember the majority of people on this list NOT getting excited about Hillary because she said the A word(and that included me) In fact, I recall that most were and have been pretty disgusted with her. I have not supported her. The problem for me(and probably others too) is that I am so much worse off economically now than let's say 4 years ago.And yes, I know that there is no administration that can just come out and solve all the terrible problems that we face in the US--but I gotta tell you it's hard for me to support the party that has put us into such a tailspin on so many issues(and that is not to say that the Dems are not without fault). Yes, it may be wonderful to see a hockey mom up there talking about special needs and I have loved McCain on his autism stance-------but what good is all that if i am having trouble right now putting food on the table for me and and trying to pay for his therapy. I have never struggled so much in the past as I am now and I am scared. thanks for listening, maurine Subject: Re: Palin statement about Special needs childrenTo: EOHarm Date: Thursday, September 4, 2008, 9:16 AM Lujene,Best post I have read on this list for a long, long time. Hey Lujene who said they both havent pandered? If she would have gone into details about how and what rather than a quick mention it would have carried more weight. But her entire speech was like that - surfacey and lacking substance. I have brought up what Hillary has done before. She is no star on my hit parade. I may not have answers to problems but reserve the right to comment on them. I happen to think both sides are full of it. Hey did you happen to hear Sam Brownback's comments about her? Egads! Guest guest
Lujene,I am not very happy with much of what Hillary Clinton has done with respect to our children. She was the first candidate, however, to inject the word "autism" into the Presidential campaign in a significant way. I am critical of the alliances in which she subsequently engaged and her lack of responsiveness on critical issues we hold dear. I am also well aware of her role in promoting the vaccine program. On the other hand, when reform of the vaccine compensation program was on the table in the Senate back in 2003 Hillary Clinton was extremely helpful. I suspect she will be helpful again on that issue in the future. The picture is complicated and we need to recognize its complexities.Again, while I am not a Hillary Clinton supporter she is no more the devil incarnate for our kids than many other politicians. I agree that we must do what we can to cultivate all politicians to be responsive to the issues that affect our children. That includes not only Palin, but Clinton and others.I do not see support of Clinton as hypocrisy, although it would be better if we all take a more balanced approach to any candidate - in the interests of our children. All politicians pander, but we must challenge any candidate to live up to their words and promises. That is our job. We need those with connections to or support for Clinton because, like it or not, she is and will be a major force in the Senate and an important sector of American politics over the next several years. The same goes for Palin who largely is a question mark. I would not dismiss her nor would I attribute favorable qualities or positions to her simply because she has a child with a disability.I think we need to be balanced in all respects - this is the only way we can be effective for our children regardless of who we support. I know you agree with this, but that point may have been somewhat lost in your message even if it is central to what you are trying to convey.BobLujene,Best post I have read on this list for a long, long time. Guest guest
We need to find out what Palin will do for our children. What is her track record? It is largely unknown.APPLAUSE! Guest guest
How functional is any stance(or lip service)....when in the end....congessional voting is done lock step with which ever party is the current power. > > > > > > > > Palin just made the comment " to all the parents and families > with > > > special needs children, you will now have an advocate and a voice > in > > > the white house... Guest guest
It's a problem no doubt, but our options are just our options, sadly. Guest guest
Maurine, I so understand what you are saying. We also are worse off then we were 4 to 8 years ago. I am so struggling with this vote this year. Your not alone and you are in my thoughts. Guest guest
Mareen, I also appreciate your words. They hold much insight and truth. I know I get over zealous too often. For that, I apologize to all. Guest guest
, I am a very passionate and compassionate person. It is part of who I am. Always has been. I guess I have worked so hard, with the help of so many parents, like yourself, it nearly does me in to see and hear all the deception, lies, smearing and ugliness come out. I see it as a threat to our community and children. I can hardly stand it. Our road is so long and hard without the fighting and anger amongst ourselves. I am guilty myself. As I said, I get too passionate. I go on the defense, much as a mother bear does protecting her cub. I feel threatened and all will be lost - again. I do apologize. Honestly, I don't know. It has taken me away from my family for an extended period of time. I have no life and no friends outside of autism. Maybe, much as many of you do. I really don't know. You're kind words and encouragement definately help. I'm glad some feel I've been an asset to our cause. I will never regret my efforts up to this point. NEVER. You, your child, your family, and all of the others have made it worthwhile. Just today, I received an email from a health care advisor in McCain's campaign HQ. I guess I need to find out what they have to say before I decide. I mean this in all sincerity, I wish we (obviously not me) could obtain a statement from Obama on vaccines and autism or disablilities in general so we could in the very least have that discussion put to rest. I an grateful to all who have allowed me the pleasure of serving you and fighting the good fight. Guest guest
The way I understand it, it is not true. I read a couple of discussions here yesterday that dismissed this as another non-truth. I believe the budget was split in two with the same amount of totally funding still being allocated. I also read that funding is to be increased by 2011. > >> > Palin just made the comment "to all the parents and families with special needs children, you will now have an advocate and a voice in the white house..."? ?> >>
