Guest guest
Good Morning Gretchen and Everyone I hope all is well ... I would like to ask you if there is any help for osteoporosis? ... I am now back in London again...just starting my gym exercises here....but I was unwell for sometime. I wonder if anyone heard about a drug called Reclast, it is for the treatment of osteoporosis. I have been in Brazil for while and done a bone scan, found out my bone is not very good The doctor told me to exercise but not to do weights etc.. I have been on fosamax for 4 years but even then my bone density is poor....hum Gretchen, do you have any news or database on bone heath here? I would like to thank you all for the help and support always All the best wishes God Bless Hugs Joana in London
Guest guest
HI....The " dronates " , eg. Fosamax, Actonel & Boniva are prescribed for osteoporosis; is related to osteopenia (low bone density). They reduce occurrence of wrist, hip & spine fractures. The first 2 are taken once/week; require sitting/standing positions when taken orally with H2O & no eating for 30 minutes. Actions: Trigger apoptosis/'death of the osteoclasts; with the osteoblasts continuing to build the bone matrix.  Also, I've taken both personally & had stomach upset & muscle pains.  I've just attended a pharmacologic nursing seminar today. RECLAST is a 15 min. infusion done 1/year ; decreases vertebral fracture by 70%; hip by 41%. I presume this is more expensive than the pills.   Last Jly./08, I fell 3 stairs down into the basement. No fracture for the rest of the body (was that good?) but I broke a bone that is attached to the last toe of my right foot that required 6 weeks to heal. This is a downside for all even reclast. It was mentioned too, re:osteonecrosis of the jaw as a side effect.   I don't know if this is an issue for persons affected with CMT. My son has CMT_x and I'm a carrier.   I hope this helps. A concerned mom.
