Hi ,

Perhaps in North America and the UK, the connotation and legal

definition of " assessment " versus " diagnosis " mean different things.

Amazingly, (now here I am being somewhat facetious) regular

elementary school teachers seem to have the power to " diagnose "

students with Attention Deficit Disorder, and school systems can

compel parents to put their children on Ritalin or else, but here (in

Canada) clinical psychologists can make assessments that are valid

for a seeking a variety of services.

I remember once reading part of an assessment from a clinical

psychologist to my doctor (a general practitioner) and I asked her,

" is this a diagnosis? " and she said, " yes, it is. " Anyway, I knew

what you meant and I think most of our members do too. I'm just sorry

that I mixed things up a bit myself! Please forgive me.

That being said, I certainly feel the most important news here,

leaving all the semantics, legal definitions, etc. aside, is that you

have been seen by someone who is a foremost authority on AS and that

person has concurred that you are on the spectrum!!! I really don't

want technicalities clouding the most significant news of the day

here, and the fact the seeds were planted right here on ASPIRES.

BTW, Maxine was a member of ASPIRES for a number of years until we

lost the FEAT listserv.

I hope that our members will share in your happiness at finally

receiving validation. Back when our listserv was in its heyday with

800+ members, when a member received official confirmation, it was

cause for celebration in the group. As Tony Attwood would say,

" Congratulations, you have AS! "

hugs!
