Guest guest
Unlike using extremely cold water, which can be damaging to your nerves, you may use saunas, hot tubs, Jacuzzis, etc., unless you have autonomic neuropathy, in which case the heat can dangerously lower your blood pressure. Also, you will not cause nerve damage if you use a hot pad as long as it's on a low or medium heat setting. These are OK from a neuropathic standpoint, with a couple of warnings: If you have sensory neuropathy, your skin may not be able to recognize when the water is too hot, so proceed with caution and don't scald yourself. The common wisdom is that if you enjoy spas, use them. It's like getting massages: some people don't like them; others swear by them. Be careful getting in and out of hot tubs if you have balance difficulties. 365 Tips is a weekly e-mail service brought to you by The Neuropathy Association in cooperation with DemosHealth publications and author Mims Cushing.
