chipmunk died in wall a year ago...any advice?

I'm ashamed to be mentioning this in this group but I ran into a chipmunk (I

think chipmunk) in my basement after accidentally leaving my garage door open

and after frighening him, he ran up into a hole in boards between basement and

garage. A week later basement smelled like it died. Not feeling well and

unable to reach him, I stuffed alot of cloths up into hole to stop the odor and

I forgot about it. I didn't notice an odor coming up anywhere else in house

after I put the clothes up there. I know I should have done something sooner

but just remembered it recently. Should I get it removed now or after this long

would anything organic of animal be gone and not a health hazard. I know this

seems neglectful of my health but I had an injury to my foot and have been on

crutches since March and alot of things that should be done are not. Thanks for

any advice.
