Guest guest
And thats why all of us need to be on their side! Obama has ran from this issue all along. I want the $5,000 tax credit so I can take my kid to any DAN doctor I choose. With Obama in office, we will become a socialist society, have to wait in line for health care from some schmuck mainstream doctor and pay ridiculous taxes for government funded programs for people who dont want to roll up their sleeves and do the work themselves. As parents of autistic kids, we know how to be tough. As for Palin - I admire her immensly! I would rather have someone by McCain's side who is not afraid to shoot a gun! We need someone in office like this to protect us from the people who bomb buildings, schools and cut off peoples heads!!!!!! > > Shortly into interview last night with McCain and Palin, McCain said, > without prompting or being questioned, that he wanted Palin to work on > autism...I don't remember the exact words, but he said " cure " and I > believe mentioned insurance. Guest guest
"And finally, you know those special needs families, I — you know, after a debate you always kind of wish you had said something. And one thing that I wanted to say was that — in our town hall meetings we have lots of families show up with children that have autism, and other special needs families. Obviously Palin wants to take on that task of helping relieve the burden, find what's causing autism, find a cure for it." Guest guest
That was great to see. McCain talks about it about 3 min into it. I was going to vote for them, and I still am, but hearing him talk about finding out what is causing it makes me very happy. Also, I 'd like to say, I believe him. He has nothing to lose by bringing the truth out. He doesn't have to worry about future employment they way Obama does. I think his age serves a purpose here. His vision for the country includes that he might not be here that much longer. I don't think personal gain is what he is thinking of. I think he is concerned about Autism because he knows what it will mean for the country if the rates continue to increase at the rates that have in the last 10 years. Guest guest
Agree with Maurine. I didn’t hear anything about vaccines, thimerosal or mercury. Autism Speaks wants to find a cure for autism too and we all know how that turned out (so far). Also, I’m pretty sure that Obama understands that autism is an epidemic. Probably 99% of America does too. - Politics are not that simplisitc-never have been I believe that the majority of voters in this country have already made up their minds--including most on this list- and one video isn't going to change it. Guest guest
He was answering Hannity's question as to what Palin's role would be as VP. McCain said her roles would be energy, reform and helping relieve the burden of families with special needs children - he then went on to specifically talk about autism and finding the cause and cure. He also said they have met many families with children with autism at their town hall meetings. For all those families who have been aggressive at those rallies to get a chance to meet and speak with McCain and Palin about our cause and needs - thank you - you have been heard and have brought autism into this election - at least with one party. Thank you Lin - I know you were one of those parents! Subject: Re: Hannity interview last nightTo: EOHarm Date: Thursday, October 9, 2008, 7:41 AM That was great to see. Guest guest
Maureen, Autism has been listed on both of their sights for as long as they have been running or longer. It's an issue both mention often. This is due to all of the hard work parents across the country have done in order to make our community heard. I posted about a week ago an aritcle asking " what diseases do the candidates care about most? " McCain's -tobacco use and autism; Obama's -HIV, Lead poisoning and autism. I would be very interested if any one has any information on Palin's sister's view of autism, or Palin's herself. ND-accept only? vaccine induced? Genetic only? etc. This would be very important information to know. Guest guest
Being a Ron supporter, I have been forced to study both McMain and Obama's records, policies and visions for the future of America. I have to make a choice. I know that autism isn't the only problem America faces, but as our children are falling into its grips at a rate higher that 1 in 150, I can't help but put a major part of my focus here. I watched the interview and was quite pleased that the subject of autism was raised. At this point, to bring up the autism/vaccine connection would be a campaign death sentence. Big Pharma is watching way too closely, and at the mere mention of " fault " , they would swoop down so hard and fast, it would make our heads spin. That being said, previous refereces to the autism/vaccine connection by both McCain and Obama clearly puts McCain on the forefront of not only believing in such a connection, but actually doing something about it. Below are statements made by both Candidates during their campaign trails: " It's indisputable that (autism) is on the rise among children, the question is what's causing it. And we go back and forth and there's strong evidence that indicates it's got to do with a preservative in vaccines. " -- McCain, Texas town hall meeting, February 29, 2008. " We've seen just a skyrocketing autism rate. Some people are suspicious that it's connected to the vaccines. This person included. [Points to someone in the audience.] The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it. We can't afford to junk our vaccine system, we have to figure out what's happening. If we keep on seeing the increases in the rate we're seeing, we're never going to have enough money to take care of these children. " --Barack Obama, Pennsylvania Rally, April 21,2008. To view video clip, see http://blog.washingtonpost.com/fact- checker/2008/04/dr_obama_and_dr_mccain.html At this point in the campaign, I truly believe that to zero in on vaccines as an actual cause of autism, would be political suicide for either man. But still, McCain has publicly stated what I need to hear. I am not convinced that the truth will come out about the dangers of vaccines, under an Obama administration. Both men have supported the Combating Autism Act, so at least we know that they are aware that autism has reached epidemic proportions. -Trish
Guest guest
I agree with you. Our family is very thankful to the parents who have done this work. Our son was diagnosed in April, we have become very active precisely for that reason. Those parents were fighting for us even when we didn't know it. I would love to know EXACTLY what the candidates are going to do but I don't think that is going to happen before the election. So, all I truly have is my gut. Guest guest
Maureen, I can't get on my other computer right now with all of the information Obama's campaign staffer gave me. But later when my son is in ABA I will steal the computer back and post some of the information for you and others. They are plans on overall autism and disability related issues. Obama wants also to hire one person to gather everyone together and corrdinate all autism related research. Just as McCain wants to have Palin be responsible for. This is a huge step to have both candidates want to make sure someone gets all of the information together in one place, we just have to keep pushing that there is a voice for us in there amongst that information. - --------- Hannity interview last night Shortly into interview last night with McCain and Palin, McCain said, without prompting or being questioned, that he wanted Palin to work on autism...I don't remember the exact words, but he said "cure" and I believe mentioned insurance. Guest guest
I have said it before but it bears repeating. Our political purpose as parents of children with chronic diseases, including autism, should be to make our politicians deal with the issues and respond to them. I think we have had a great deal of success in doing this - both with McCain and with Obama. Our success in elevating our issues into the political debate matters far more than which candidate is elected. The issue of vaccines and its relationship to autism cuts across party lines. Over the years we have had friends in Congress and the state legislators on both sides of the aisle. In New York the legislation limiting thimerosal in vaccines was passed due to leadership of both Republicans and Democrats. I have not heard enough from either candidate to say that one will be superior to the other on the issues we care most about. I personally think it is self-defeating for any of us to promote one candidate or the other because of their stated views on autism or vaccines or any other issue we care about. The point is that whatever our affiliation or whichever candidate we support we have been successful on both sides in making autism and vaccines more significant public issues. It is that kind of approach that will help our kids whichever candidate wins. (Remember the one who loses will remain as a prominent and strategically important Senator.)And...one more thing. I can't resist. I do not think we need a Vice-President "who is not afraid to shoot a gun", whatever that may mean. At least, I fail to see how that is a good or relevant criterion by which to select a Vice President. And after all, we have had a Vice-President who has met the gun shooting requirement and it does not seem to have gone well for the country or the man he shot. And I most certainly do not see how one candidate is superior to the other in protecting us "from the people who bomb buildings, schools and cut off people's heads." To believe so is to accept some campaign attack sound bite intended to malign a candidate's character and distract us all from the real issues. Neither party and no politician successfully protected us from the attack on 9/11 and no party or politician can lay claim to superiority in protecting us in these areas.BobMaureen,Autism has been listed on both of their sights for as long as they have been running or longer. Guest guest
For me, this has nothing to do with partisanship. It never has. In fact, I was a registered republican until this past May but I'll be voting for Obama come November. And no, I can think of nothing that will change my mind at this point because I've done my research. Autism is an incredibly important topic for me, obviously, as my son is on the spectrum. But it's not the ONLY important topic. When I look at these two men, Obama is the one who best represents me and my beliefs. There are vast differences between these two men on many levels and whether or not they're republican or democrat is a secondary concern. I will say this though...even if I had planned on voting for McCain as president, I would have changed my mind after the emergence of Palin on the scene. I don't even have words to explain how I feel about her... Let me just say she's left me with my jaw dropped open on many occasions....and not in a good way. The truth is, both candidates have mentioned autism in their speeches, both men recognize that it's reached epidemic proportions, and both men know, without a doubt, that something has to be done. After that, other issues/topics need to come into play. We can't choose our candidates based on one topic and one topic alone. I have a friend who votes republican every election simply because the republican candidates are primarily pro-life. She's feels so strongly about the abortion issue, she's become completely blind to all the OTHER problems our country is facing. I don't feel that's responsible voting. Just my two cents. Yes, Maureen. It is obvious that the most of the vocal people on this list are Dems and that there is no changing their minds. But, she's absolutley correct about both McCain and Obama. I've been trying to tell you and everyone else that all along. In my opinion, until we are ready to let partisanship go and support those who support us and our children, very little, if anything, will change. There are many more people on this list who watch and learn, quietly. The children are our future! I can’t wait for this fucking election to be over because I’m sick and tired of this conversation that doesn’t go anywhere. - McCain has already come out and spoken up about vaccines and thimerosal. He has done so in both word and deed. He has spoken out against pharma on numerous occassions. And Obama????? Oh, that's right he doesn't support vaccine choice and is the number one receipient of pharma money in the entire US Congress. Hmmm... > > > > > > > > > Politics are not that simplisitc-never have been > > I believe that the majority of voters in this country have already made up > > their minds--including most on this list- > > and one video isn't going to change it. > > M > >
Guest guest
I can't wait for the process to be over too. I can't wait for McCain to get it there and fix everything. LOL Only kidding... But really, I will be voting for McCain based on all his policies, as well as the strength of his character. See you at the polls maureen Re: Re: Hannity interview last night Like Bob said, neither of these candidates have done anything substantial for our community. But, McCain has been in office for what 25 years or so and Obama 3 or 4? My point is McCain can SAY all he wants- the guy is LOSING in the polls and will SAY anything at this point to win the election. DOING and SAYING are two different things. Guest guest
THANK YOU CHRISTINE! I don't think people (low info voters especially) actually COMPARE what Obama's health care plan is and what McCain's actual so-called health plan means! For those clueless about it all PLEASE read from link below-- because in short, our family of 4 struggling due to health care and pre-existing conditions like AUTISM would like to tell McCain to take his PIDDLY slimy 5 grand and stick it! Our family will suffer GREATLY because of McCain's health plan! McCain's Health Plan DOA http://demockracy.com/mccains-health-plan-doa/ and read this: McCain Secretly Plans New Tax on Middle Class http://blog.thehill.com/2008/09/16/mccain-secretly-plans-new-tax-on-middle-class\ / Blueprint for Change: Healthcare From the last debate in case some of you missed it!!! : Obama: " Now, Sen. McCain has a different kind of approach. He says that he's going to give you a $5,000 tax credit. What he doesn't tell you is that he is going to tax your employer-based health care benefits for the first time ever. So what one hand giveth, the other hand taketh away. He would also strip away the ability of states to provide some of the regulations on insurance companies to make sure you're not excluded for pre-existing conditions or your mammograms are covered or your maternity is covered. And that is fundamentally the wrong way to go. " Source: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/07/presidential.debate.transcript/ PEOPLE! Guest guest
I was in Wasilla recently. When Palin was the mayor, she inherited a debt-free town and left it $22M in the hole…That is about $2,500.00 for every man, woman, and child in the town – oddly, that’s about the same number as the bail-out left the country. I would like to see someone who spends the money to raise up the people of this country, rather than the corporations which endeavor to crush us with low wages and benefits. I may have voted for McCain, but with Palin as his running-mate, there is no way. Any woman who either lies about her child’s parentage or is so irresponsible with a high-risk pregnancy does not command respect in my book; never mind pushing a shot-gun marriage between two children because they made a poor decision. I have no issue with others’ morals, mores, ideals, and belief being divergent with my own, but I draw the line at their trying to enforce their views upon me. Just because I want my children to remain chaste until marriage does not mean I wish them to be ignorant about their bodies and sex. Just because I would never choose to abort a child does not mean that others should be denied this right. Just because I carry a gun does not mean I will choose a VP who knows how to use one. Just because I have strong religious beliefs doesn’t mean I want a zealot as the leader of my country. I resent any campaign that takes for granted that just because I am a registered party member that I will blindly vote for their candidates. I detest the mudslinging attacks aired as if they are the whole truth. I especially hate that a campaign would presume to discount my intelligence by airing sound bites full of catch phrases with absolutely no content and assume that because I heard good buzz words this is enough to buy my vote; I can read, I do research, I do not live in an ivory tower, and I have the ability to question. I look forward to a world where we can live as one people. Race, religion, wealth, and ideology are individual choices and opportunities; but respect and “brotherly” love should be mandatory and basic human necessities such as dignity, complete health care, plenty of clean water and food, shelter, and quality education should be guaranteed. The amount of wealth held in the greedy fists of this country’s wealthiest citizens is appalling, especially where it is earned at human cost; corporations and fat cats should pay their fair share of taxes not be given shelter from responsibility to support the nation that made them rich. I am so over the lobbyists owning the government. I am over the government eliminating the very freedoms this country was founded upon. I don’t want to be forced to flee my community to hide in the wilderness in order to avoid incarceration in one of the many internment camps already built across our nation just because I choose the road less traveled and have the capacity for independent thought. I don’t want my children to inherit ridiculous debt and a world too polluted to support their health. Bridgette - Ditto! Liz P
