Inorganic nanofibers from the Czech Republic will replace objectionable

nanoparticles in the Cosmetics Industry

SpecialChem - Dec 2, 2009

PRAGUE -- The Czech company KERTAK NANOTECHNOLOGY s.r.o, is the first supplier

of inorganic nanofibers on an industrial basis in the world and is currently in

negotiations with the world's largest cosmetic producers relating to the

application of titanium white based nanofibers (TiO2) in cosmetics. Based on the

latest research, nanofibers are the desired solution to the problems faced by

using nano-particles in cosmetic products, mainly those producing sun

protections creams. The unique property of nanofibers completely eliminates the

possible negative influence on consumer health while retaining the whitening

effects of nano-particles. " The enormous demand of the world's leading cosmetic

producers confirms our assumption about the strategic importance of nanofibers

in the cosmetic industry " , stated Ladislav Jandácek, Executive Head of KERTAK

NANOTECHNOLOGY s.r.o.

The rapid introduction of nanotechnologies into the cosmetic industry in 2008

was slowed down by concerns about the possible negative effects of

nano-particles on human health. Britain's certification agency SA Cert stated

that it will not certify products as " BIO " as long as they contain substances

produced using nanotechnologies. Scientists were concerned that nano-particles

in creams applied to skin may infiltrate body membranes. Such concerns

influenced many leading cosmetic and suntan creams producers, who had been

adding nano-particles to their products. Companies such as L' Oréal, Unilever

and Boots were forced to search for alternative methods.

The solution to these health issues has finally come in year 2009 with the

opening of the first and unique industrial line for production of inorganic

nanofibers in the world. Nanofibers markedly improve the properties of products

and their added value. One of the basic properties of nanofibers is large

specific surface and high porosity.

Inorganic nanofibers would mainly find their usage in the cosmetics industry. A

new type of production link based on technology Nanospiderâ„¢ enables vast

improvements in the quality of skin protection creams for example. Titanium

white (TiO2) in the form of nanofibers has the same whitening effect as the

nano-particles that were used formerly. While nano-particles may infiltrate into

inner body membranes, nanofibers remain on the surface of the skin. Titanium

whitening effect caused by nanofibers represents a successful return of

nanotechnologies to the cosmetics industry.
