Guest guest
HELP scared to get a flu shot The flu shot does not 'bring on' CMT. But stress is known to worsen symptoms. If you're stressing over this, or over your husband' transplant and care for 2-3 years, this stress may have added to your CMT progression. Aask your doctor if you should get the flu shot. Guest guest
I have gotten the flu shot every year. I have CMT1B and I never had a reaction to the shot....anyway not that I noticed. My symptoms of CMT worsen with each passing year but it is gradual. I did not relate it to the flu shot....but maybe I am wrong. I get my flu shot 10/22....I will have to be more aware of my body after I get it. June

Guest guest
I am a nurse with CMT type 2. I am quite confident that CMT is neither exacerbated or accelerated by the flu shot. The vaccination contains no live virus and works only with your immune system to potentiate immunity to a particular virus. Distal nerve involvement or corruption by flu vaccine makes no logical sense. Like everyone else here, my symptoms and issues become greater with each passing year, but to attribute that deterioration to a flu shot would be very myopic. I would strongly encourage you to get the flu shot and protect your loved one from a potentially devastating exposure to a virus that is KNOWN to cause potentially fatal results to an immune-compromised person (infant, elderly, transplant, etc.)
Guest guest
Hello, I don't have lots of time to talk on the CMT list given the fact that I run a daycare and homeschool my kids LOL. However, my kids and myself have always gotten the flu shot. Yet, I am unsure of the H1N1 shot what does everyone think about that? My issue with that is not enough research has been done to guarantee no bad side effects. I am so worried about this not giving my kids the shot and then if I don't what will happen? take care all, Heidi, mother of 5, 2 with CMT and myself. Guest guest
I have resisted getting a flu shot for years due to fear of side effects & such. However, I am in three high-risk groups, and work at a college. Pure numbers imply that eventually I am going to be exposed, if I haven't been already. I got my first flu shot ever on Oct 1 this year, and had no problems. The doctor told me that the most common effect would be feeling pain at the injection site. Fortunately, I didn't even have that problem. Of course, that could have been because I also had a Tetanus shot in the other arm that day, and that was really sore for a couple of days, which is to be expected. Perhaps that took my mind off my flu shot arm! I know several people who don't have CMT or any other neuromuscular disease who have been wiped out for a couple of days after the Flu vaccine. Apparently, some people do get mild Flu symptoms when they get vaccinated. Perhaps that is what you experienced. > > > > I have gotten the flu shot every year. Guest guest
Funny, I was just going to take a quick look at the daily digest before running downstairs to get my flu-shot. I get it every year, and plan to get the H1N1 if it is available in the Employee Health Center today. The regular flu shot is a killed virus. I don't even defer my blood donors for that. You can get your flu shot and donate blood in the same day if you like -- and blood bankers are the most cautious people you will ever meet! The H1N1 is a live attenuated vaccine, but CDC is advising that even they don't have to wait to give blood, which gives me much confidence in it's safety. The biggest reason to get the vaccine is that flu, of any variety, is known to be potentially serious and even life-threatening in people with underlying medical conditions, especially those affecting breathing. There are several on this list with breathing issues related to CMT and are thus at higher risk for a bad or even dangerous case of the flu. My biggest reason for taking the flu shot yearly is so I don't bring it home to my family from the hospital where I work. I think I've been a pretty good guinea pig for the rest of the group. As far as I can tell, no effect whatsoever on the CMT. Holli in Tarzana, CA > > >
