Guest guest
Very true-I've read much of the same info. Also, parents need to be careful with some of the PBS disclipline referral forms that are now being used in many districts and sent home for the parents to sign. My kids' school district starting using the SWIS (School-wide Information System) http://www.swis.org/ forms last year. Usually the forms have 3 copies - top white copy gets kept at the school and the pink and yellow copy gets sent home to the parents. The parent is asked to sign the copies and keep the pink copy and send the yellow copy back to school. Most parents will mindlessly comply with the instructions like good little socialists. I send my yellow copy back after I write - " There is no legal requirement for a parent signature. " Parents especially with kids with disabilities need to be careful with these type of forms which could easily be used by the district as legal documents to more readily expel kids. The parents were never informed why they are even being asked to sign these forms, and most parents don't even think to ask. Most just assume that " it is all good " , and they are doing their part in working with the school to ensure their kids are being respectful and behaving appropriately. The concept of using and teaching SCHOOL-WIDE positive social behaviors sounds laudable to most of the parents, and can be if implemented appropriately, but it all depends on how well the educators are trained to do this (obviously like anything else). I've been somewhat disappointed with my kids' school's PBS implementation because of the lack of consistency used by the educators. Some of the educators are doing a wonderful job with PBS, and others just plain suck! I have found that the educators who have been doing the best job don't expect the kids to be little mindless socialists all uniformly conforming for the sake of satisfying the educator.
