I think that people are mostly tired of online petitions as a means of

getting anything done. Look at all the hoops this one makes you jump

through. The NJ people collected 10,000 names for vaccine reform and

they were all but ignored by state politicians.

Someday the technology will be there so that REGISTERED VOTERS can

sign onto online petitions which then get certified by officials, just

like they do now for printed ones. Then these petitions will be taken

seriously. They have something like that now in the UK, but I don't

know how exactly it works.

How are the top ideas determined?

The " Top 10 Ideas for America " will be determined through two rounds

of voting. In the first round, ideas will compete against other ideas

in the same issue category. The first round will end on December 31,

2008, and the top 3 rated ideas from each category will make it into

the second round. The second round of voting will begin on Monday,

January 5, and each qualifying idea will compete against the

qualifying ideas from all other categories. Second round voting will

end on Thursday, January 15.

I am just responding with my opinion to your question, why the

apparent apathy. Everyone, I mean everyone has a hand out to Obama,

from Wall St. from Detroit, from state governments to underwater

mortgage holders. I am sure Santa doesn't mind the competition.

In the absence of an effective bi-partisan grass roots movement

promoting the interests of our children, I am not surprised that

symbolic actions like email collecting marketing stunts like online

petitions spring up to fill the void. I have both few expectations and

little enthusiasm for partisan exercises (Change.org is an expressly

partisan effort). But don't let that stop anyone else from having

fun! I do admire the good intentions.
