Guest guest
I just went through this in MI. I had my son in July and went in full guns a blazing. First of all, it is a matter of FACT that Dr.s, Nurses and Medical support personel are learning untruthes. As expected there was a low buzz that I was denying vit k and eye antibiotic. Before I had him, I learned what my state laws are and then drafted a birth plan AND my own waivers. I asked others on this forums to share what they did. I was told by a student nurse she was just tought to tell mothers who ask or object that it is a state law. Needless to say she learned from me that day that she's being taught lies and to lie. When I told the gals checking me in that I brought my own waiver - they never asked me to sign anything. Also, the baby was not allowed out of my sight and I got out as soon as I could. All clearly written well before the big day. There are many, many stories of mothers denying and then medical records show the child was immunized when they took the child away for ruitine diagnostics. I felt that it would get dicey if there was a difficult birth or if I has any signs of infection. I think I would have caved because child endangerment could be posed. Fortunately, it was a seemless uneventful birth. Educate yourself, be prepared and confident in your convictions. I requested to be treated as a customer. > > >My brother and sister-in-law wish to decline not only the HepB for > >their baby who will be born this month, but also wish to decline the > >Vitamin K shot and the eye drops. > >They were told by their OB that they can be reported to child > >protective services and also that it is state mandated (they live in > >Temple, TX) and that it is a misdemeanor if you refuse! Guest guest
but also wish to decline the Vitamin K shot and the eye drops. I don't know about the eye drops, but with Vitamin K, here are some sites to look at, with references: http://www.babyreference.com/VitaminKinjectORnot.htm http://www.givingbirthnaturally.com/newborn-vitamin-k.html "Childhood cancer, intramuscular vitamin K, and pethidine given during labour." J. Golding et al. BMJ 1992 http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1883000 "Vitamin K—what, why, and when" E. Hey. Arch. Dis. Childhood Fetal and Neonatal Edition. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1721508 "Vitamin K At Birth" (Editorial) BMJ 1996http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/313/7051/179 specifically "The case for using oral vitamin K to prevent early haemorrhagic disease of the newborn is sound. However, it has been shown to be ineffective in preventing late disease. Although giving breast fed infants repeated oral doses of vitamin K in the first two months of life may prevent late disease, compliance for such a regimen has been shown to be poor, leaving infants at risk." So first they demand absolute proof that oral v.K will prevent late hemorragic disease.. There is NO absolute proof of almost anything, especially in biology - and for millions of years no-one had v.K shots or oral vitamin K - unless you count green leafy vegetables (and that's only K1!) Then they appeal to the "compliance" argument. Come on! Given the amount of pressure have the shot, do you think any parent who's going to go to the trouble to not only find out how to avoid it, but then ensure that it's actually avoided and not given anyway behind their back is going to not comply with taking a freakin' v.K pill everyday for the first 2 or 3 months and breastfeed? Given the shown heart and bone benefits of v.K, everyone should probably be taking some. Jim
