The Top Health Stories of 2008 According to CNN – Autism takes 2nd Place

http://is.gd/dAsF [excerpt]

(CNN) -- Concerns about health care, food and vaccine safety added to

the anxieties Americans felt this year. [...]

[item 2] Autism

Debate over the causes of autism continued to rage after a court

decided to compensate a family whose daughter developed the disorder

after receiving childhood vaccinations.

For years, some parents have contended that childhood vaccinations

cause autism.

But studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine and

elsewhere have found no link between autism and vaccines.

Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the

American Academy of Pediatrics, the Institute of Medicine and other

medical organizations have repeatedly asserted that vaccines are safe.

But the Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Vaccine

Injury Compensation concluded that Hannah Poling, a child who had been

predisposed to autism, had a condition that was " significantly

aggravated " by vaccinations and that her family should be compensated.

Hannah began having problems after receiving nine childhood vaccines

in 2000, said her father, Dr. Jon Poling, a neurologist in Athens,

Georgia.

While the Polings said they don't oppose childhood vaccinations, they

want thimerosal, a mercury vaccine preservative, removed.

Thimerosal was removed from infant vaccines beginning in 1999. Even

after its removal, the autism rate has continued to climb. The CDC

estimates that one in 150 children is affected.

The United Nations declared the first official World Autism Awareness

Day on April 2 this year.

Some observations about autism being a top news item for 2008.

1. This was not as a result of any autism awareness campaign being

undertaken by the arm-in-arms AS/CDC/AAP/ASA.

2. This was not the result of some big new autism research paper.

3. This did not break the front pages because of any autism rally,

yowling blog sites, yahoogroups or autism daily newsreports (but they

helped!).

4. This did not happen because self-appointed autism activists

finally were listened to on government public health and vaccine

boards after years of vain efforts.

5. This did not happen because of any legislation to rhetorically

combat autism.

6. No online polls or online petitions made any impact that could be

determined.

Autism was breaking news primarily because of LITIGATION.

Litigation through the courts, even the bizzarro vaccine courts has

been and will be the leading edge sharp knife that finally cuts open

the truth. Why? because the government, public health, executive

branch agencies are far too conflicted and biased to render

inconvenient truth. The courts system, while often a sloppy venue, is

far less biased and bought off.

ps. Who are the autism heroes of 2008 and 2009? Lawyers. And that's

no lawyer joke.

" Autism was breaking news primarily because of LITIGATION. "

I want to add, and the fact that the Polings took it public and had a

press conference about it. I believe there have been other settlements

that we never heard about because the families kept it quiet - for

whatever reason.
