Guest guest
You are right, I did not post entire thread....which started out with this comment from CNN: "Debate over the causes of autism continued to rage after a courtdecided to compensate a family whose daughter developed the disorderafter receiving childhood vaccinations."-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Even so, my friend, I suspect we will have to "agree to disagree". I would respectfully suggest the successful litigation of one case, though useful and encouraging....did not serve as the primary impetus to keep the "debate over the cause of autism" raging throughout the year. If anything, the Hannah Poling case provided the CDC with the opportunity to continue "muddying the waters".....claiming Hannah did not suffer a vaccine adverse reaction...but... instead....suffered a "rare mitochondrial disorder"....that may have caused her "autism like symptoms" to develop. In any event, for the most part.....it has not been "lawyers" who have been waging the "debate over the causes of autism" for decades...in the court of public opinion. It has been all the people I already mentioned...and...in addition....Dr. Bernardine Healy, who I believe deserves as much recognition for "continuing the autism debate" in 2008 as anyone else. I suspect this debate will remain in the court of public opinion....until a lawyer in a "litigation" court finally wins a verdict that awards compensation to the thousands of "litigant" families awaiting JUSTICE. When THAT lawyer....wins THAT verdict......I will agree THAT verdict and THAT lawyer should be recognized as the primary news story of the DECADE. Guest guest
Dr. Bernardine Healy did say some wonderful and courageous things, for a former head of a public health agency. But that's all she did was SAY them. Saying stuff to keep the winds blowing in our direction is great; why I try to do it everyday! But still, words are only words and rhetoric, while a necessary start, only goes so far. The litigation attorneys like Shoemaker are getting real things accomplished. They are getting the truth pried out by doing battle in court. We will see even more of this real progress in 2009. We should embrace concrete actions over symbolism and debate. The people who get stuff done are the greater heroes, in my book.
